Sappi Limited is a global producer of wood fibre-based products, including dissolving wood pulp, paper and packaging materials. Sappi was founded in South Africa in 1936 as South African Pulp and Paper Industries, and has its head office in Rosebank, Johannesburg, with forestry plantations and pulp and paper mills across South Africa and operations in Europe and North America.

From trees to textiles

Sappi’s South African business is best known for dissolving wood pulp, a highly purified cellulose that manufacturers turn into viscose and other fibres for clothing and textiles, as well as products such as pharmaceuticals and food additives. Sappi’s Saiccor mill near Umkomaas in KwaZulu-Natal and its Ngodwana mill in Mpumalanga are among its major South African operations. Sappi also manages large timber plantations that supply its mills.

As a major industrial employer and a large private forestry landholder, Sappi depends on process, mechanical, chemical and electrical engineers and qualified foresters, specialist fields with few dedicated training pipelines in South Africa, according to a provider record checked in August 2026.

The Sappi bursary

Sappi’s undergraduate bursary targets engineering and forestry science students aged 17 to 25. BursariesAfrica’s older guide lists BEng or BSc degrees in chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical and mechatronics engineering, and BSc Forestry and Wood Science, with minimum marks of 70% in Mathematics and Physical Science and 60% in English. Sappi gives preference to students living near its main South African operations.

Sappi scales the value of funding for tuition, prescribed textbooks, accommodation and a living allowance to household income. Bursars complete paid vacation work in July and December each year, gaining experience in mills or plantations long before graduating, and successful bursars can join Sappi’s graduate programme.
