The SETA for everything that moves

TETA’s sector spans rail, aerospace, maritime, road freight, road passenger transport, taxis, freight handling, and forwarding and clearing. The bus industry covers road passenger services by minibus and bus; the rail industry covers goods, passengers and livestock, and the maintenance and overhaul of locomotives and rolling stock; forwarding and clearing agents move goods for importers and exporters within customs rules.

TETA points out that more than 95% of South Africa’s trade by volume moves by sea through the country’s seven commercial ports, placing South Africa among the world’s top 12 sea-trading nations.

What TETA does

TETA develops, registers and implements learnerships, skills programmes and strategic initiatives, and quality assures training in its sector. TETA’s priorities include research, support for small businesses, the green economy, artisan development, access to higher education, rural development, career guidance and leadership development. TETA also publishes dates for external integrated summative assessments, the final assessments for occupational qualifications.

The unemployed bursary

TETA’s unemployed bursary funds people accepted at accredited institutions who are not employed full-time and are studying transport-related careers, full-time or part-time, including aviation training and diving programmes at accredited flying schools. Fields range from logistics, transport economics and road transport management to aeronautical, marine, mechanical and electrical engineering, pilot licences, law, ICT, cybersecurity, data science and artificial intelligence. The bursary covers tuition, books, accommodation, meals and transport where applicable.

Recent calls set a minimum 40% overall average for matriculants and household income of no more than R350 000, while TETA’s bursary page asks returning students for at least 50% in previous studies. Applicants apply through TETA’s Indicium online system, and TETA allocates bursaries by chamber. The 2026 round closed on 24 September 2025.

How to research TETA

Register on the Indicium system early, since TETA has warned users about system availability updates. Choose a field linked to a transport subsector and explain how you would work in it.

Aviation students should also see the SACAA bursary.
