From a small South African office to Zutari
Zutari’s story began with a small office in South Africa. The practice of Van Wyk and Louw later rebranded as Africon and expanded across Africa, into Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, before starting work in the Middle East. Africon then merged with Connell Wagner of Australasia and Ninham Shand of South Africa to form Aurecon, which later integrated NETGroup, a transmission and distribution specialist.
The African business became Zutari, an African-founded, purpose-driven firm, and acquired Aurecon Middle East, reconnecting with its legacy in that region.
What Zutari works on
Zutari partners with clients across the infrastructure lifecycle, combining sustainable design, digital engineering and project delivery. Zutari’s recent insights show the range: how wake effects between wind turbines affect the bankability of South African wind farms, how leaders can build digital teams, and how to strengthen climate leadership in provinces and municipalities. Zutari also received recognition at the CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards.
Growing engineers early
Zutari says it invests in futures through graduate programmes, mentorship, bursaries and leadership development. Its Scholar Programme supports promising Grade 11 and 12 learners interested in engineering, in partnership with Primestars, Protec and the CESA Young Professionals Forum job shadow initiative. Zutari’s staff follow six “Zutari Codes”, including leading boldly, doing the right thing and showing grit.
The Zutari bursary
Zutari runs its Engineering Bursary Programme as part of a diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, alongside vacation work, work-integrated learning, internships and graduate programmes that form a pipeline from student to professional engineer. BursariesAfrica’s older guide lists high academic requirements, such as 70% in Matric Mathematics and Science and 70% in first year, and applications through Zutari’s careers portal in the second half of the year, but has not been refreshed with verified 2027 dates.
