VerifiedRadiography is four professions sharing one name. The Health Professions Council registers diagnostic radiographers, radiotherapy radiographers, nuclear medicine radiographers and diagnostic sonographers separately, and the community service programme lists them separately too.
Choose which one before you apply, because the degrees diverge early and the job markets are not the same. Diagnostic is the largest and the easiest to find work in. Radiotherapy and nuclear medicine are small, concentrated in a handful of oncology centres, and short of people.
Registration and community service
You register with the HPCSA Professional Board for Radiography and Clinical Technology. All four radiography categories appear on the Department of Health’s community service list, so you owe one year of remunerated service at an approved health establishment before you can register for independent practice.
Placements are allocated through the department’s online system on two cycles a year, an annual cycle and a mid-year cycle. You do not choose your province. Confirmed 23 September 2026 on the Internship and Community Service Programme pages.

Morton & Partners is the one to note: a private radiology practice funding radiographers directly is rare, and the applicant pool is far smaller than for a provincial scheme.
