Fields of Study

Most health careers in South Africa start with a degree or diploma regulated by a professional council. Medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, speech therapy, radiography and many others register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Nurses register with the South African Nursing Council, and pharmacists with the South African Pharmacy Council. Most graduates in these fields complete a year of community service in public health facilities.

Shorter diplomas and certificates lead to roles such as emergency care, pharmacy assistant, laboratory technician and community health worker. Master’s and doctoral degrees open research and specialist careers.
