The South African Council for English Education has promoted the teaching of English since 1955. Its Norah Taylor Bursary is aimed not at school leavers but at working teachers, funding experienced educators who want to specialise further in speech training, oral communication or English teaching.

Eligibility requirements

  • South African citizen.
  • A qualified teacher with at least an M+3 teaching qualification.
  • At least four years of teaching experience.

How to apply

  1. Email the national office to confirm the bursary is being offered, and download the form from sacee.org.za.
  2. Email the completed form and your supporting documents to sacee.national@gmail.com by 31 July of the year before study.
  3. Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed at their nearest SACEE branch, at their own expense.

Closing date

31 July of the year before study, when the bursary is offered. It has been suspended since 2022.

1. Is the Norah Taylor bursary open for 2027? +
The rule is that applications close on 31 July of the year before study, so a 2027 application would have been due by 31 July 2026. However, SACEE suspended the bursary for lack of funds from the 2022/2023 academic years and had not announced its return when we checked. Email the national office before applying.
2. What is SACEE? +
The South African Council for English Education, a non-profit founded in 1955 to promote the teaching and learning of English, with branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Bloemfontein.
3. Who can apply? +
Qualified teachers with at least an M+3 teaching qualification and four years of teaching experience. It is not a bursary for school leavers.
4. What does it fund? +
Further study in speech training, oral communication, or the teaching of English as a first or second language, by correspondence, part-time or full-time, at an institution in South Africa.
5. How do I apply? +
Download the form from sacee.org.za or request it from the national office, and email it with your supporting documents to sacee.national@gmail.com. Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed at their nearest branch at their own expense.
6. What are the alternatives for teachers? +
The Funza Lushaka bursary, which funds initial teacher education, and university postgraduate funding offices for further study in education.
