SANZAF is a faith-based educational and socio-welfare organization established over 43 years ago. 

Their core mission is to collect and distribute Zakah and Sadaqah (Islamic charitable donations) to support the Muslim community in South Africa. 

Zakah is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a mandatory charitable contribution made by Muslims on specific wealth holdings. 

SANZAF adheres to Shariah Law, distributing Zakat funds to eight designated categories of recipients, including students in need of financial aid for their studies.

About the SANZAF Zakah Bursary

The SANZAF Zakah Bursary is an annual program that offers financial support to South African students pursuing tertiary education (undergraduate studies) at any accredited university, university of technology, or technikon in the country. 

The bursary covers all fields of study, making it a valuable resource for students across various academic disciplines.

  1. The SANZAF Bursary Committee assesses each application.
  2. Shortlisted candidates are contacted for interviews.
  3. Successful candidates receive a Confirmation of Pledge letter.
  4. Bursary payments are made directly to the institution’s account.

SANZAF Zakah Bursary Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for the SANZAF Zakah Bursary, ensure you meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. You must be a South African citizen or a foreign national with a valid study permit.
  2. You must be:
    • A current matric student.
    • A student currently enrolled at a tertiary institution who was self-funded or sponsored by a family member the previous year.
    • A student currently enrolled at a tertiary institution who was sponsored by SANZAF the previous year.
  3. You must reside in the province where you’re applying for the bursary.
  4. You must demonstrate proven financial need.
  5. You must be from a previously disadvantaged background.
  6. You must have applied for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) before applying for the SANZAF Zakah Bursary.
  7. You must be studying or intend to study at a recognized South African university, university of technology, or technikon.
  8. You must also meet any additional requirements stipulated by SANZAF.

SANZAF Zakah Bursary Application Requirements

Applications for the SANZAF Zakah Bursary are submitted online. 

Ensure you include clear copies of the following documents with your application:

For Matric Students:

  1. Certified copy of your ID document or study permit (if a foreign national)
  2. Certified copy of your latest Matric results
  3. Motivational letter explaining why you deserve the bursary
  4. Testimonial from your school
  5. Proof of household income (latest payslips for employed individuals, affidavit if unemployed) for parents/guardians/spouse or yourself

For Tertiary Students not Previously Sponsored By SANZAF:

  1. Certified copy of your ID document or study permit (if a foreign national)
  2. Certified copy of your final Matric results or certificate
  3. Full tertiary academic record on official institution letterhead
  4. Motivational letter explaining why you deserve the bursary
  5. Testimonial from your university, Imam, or religious leader
  6. Proof of household income (latest payslips for employed individuals, affidavit if unemployed) for parents/guardians/spouse or yourself

For Tertiary Students Currently Sponsored By SANZAF:

  1. Matric final results/certificate (certified copy)
  2. 2024 mid-year tertiary academic results on official institution letterhead
  3. Proof of household income (latest payslips for employed individuals, affidavit if unemployed) for parents/guardians/spouse or yourself

Incomplete applications with missing documents may be disqualified.
