TUT gives sport bursary closing dates of 5 March and 20 July; the 2026 second-semester round closed on 20 July 2026 and the next deadline is 5 March 2027.
Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) funds some of its athletes from its own budget. Sport bursaries are one of four internal bursary types the university lists, alongside academic merit, leadership and special talent bursaries, and they are meant for students who compete at provincial, national or international level. TUT publishes very little about them: no amounts, no application form online, and only a line that terms and conditions apply. What it does publish is two fixed closing dates a year and the names of the sport staff who handle them. This page sets out that information and what it leaves out.
Two deadlines, one per semester
TUT’s general information brochure for 2027 first-years gives the closing dates as 5 March for the first semester and 20 July for the second. The second-semester window matters for athletes: a student who makes a provincial or national team during the year does not have to wait for the next academic year to apply. For the 2027 academic year, the first-semester deadline therefore falls on 5 March 2027.
Level of competition TUT expects
The only published criterion is the level of competition: athletes who take part at international, national or provincial level. TUT does not list the codes that qualify, the value of an award, whether it covers tuition, residence or both, or whether it is renewed each year. The same brochure says TUT’s internal awards reward “excellent academic and non-academic performance” and are governed by a policy for each funding category, which the university does not publish online.
The brochure does show where TUT competes most seriously. Its elite team is women’s football in the Hollywoodbets Super League and Varsity Football. High-performance codes are athletics, basketball, men’s football (ABC Motsepe League and Varsity Football), netball (including Varsity Netball) and rugby (Varsity Shield). Aerobics, esports, blind cricket, goalball and volleyball are strategic codes, and cricket, hockey, softball and supa-pool are competitive codes. The university also plays in the Varsity Cup and Varsity Sports competitions.
TUT Sport and Recreation contacts
Because there is no online form, the practical route is the Directorate of Sport and Recreation. The brochure lists:
- Director of Sport and Recreation, Dr H Mashego: 012 382 5389, MashegoHT@tut.ac.za, Room 51-124A, Pretoria Campus.
- Pretoria Campus Head of Department, Mr Kegoikantse Kgomo, whose portfolio includes coaches, contracts, bursaries and policies: 012 382 5397, KgomoKK@tut.ac.za, Room 51-G19.
- Soshanguve Campus Head of Department, Mr Elijah Ncube: 012 382 9183, NcubeTE@tut.ac.za.
- Ga-Rankuwa Campus Head of Department, Ms Dumisani Chauke: 012 382 0575, ChaukeD@tut.ac.za.
eMalahleni, Mbombela and Polokwane each have a senior sport organiser listed in the same brochure. Athletes should ask for the current application form and the sport bursary terms well before 5 March or 20 July, and have proof of their provincial, national or international selection ready.
Other TUT funding to apply for at the same time
A sport bursary may not cover all costs, so TUT athletes who qualify for NSFAS should apply there too; TUT’s Financial Aid page lists the NSFAS closing date for 2027 funding as 31 October 2026, along with external bursaries. Financial aid enquiries go through TUT’s online enquiry system linked from that page. Our TUT profile gathers other funding tied to the university, and the guide on getting a sports bursary for university gives general advice for student athletes.
