Students used to choose between two college routes: the NATED N-courses and the NC(V). With the N-courses being phased out, the real choice for new students in 2027 is between the NC(V) and the new occupational qualifications. But if you already hold NATED results, it helps to know how employers and universities see each.

How employers tend to see them
| NATED (N4 to N6 / National N Diploma) | NC(V) Level 4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Specialised theory in one field, plus workplace experience for the diploma | Broad vocational base with practical work and general subjects |
| Typical first jobs | Technician assistant, junior administrator in the field studied | Entry roles in the programme field, apprenticeships, learnerships |
| What employers ask for next | Relevant experience or a trade | Workplace experience or an occupational qualification |
How universities tend to see them
- NC(V) Level 4 is covered by national minimum admission rules for higher certificates, diplomas and degrees, with results thresholds; universities add their own requirements.
- N-qualifications are assessed case by case, most often for related diplomas at universities of technology.
Timing matters here: new students could not start N1 to N3 after 2023, N4 to N6 intakes are closing during 2026 and 2027, and anyone relying on a National N Diploma must meet every requirement by the end of June 2029.
If you are choosing now
- You have Grade 9 to 11: the NC(V) is the most widely available full qualification.
- You want a specific trade or job: an occupational qualification is built for that.
- You started N4 to N6: finish while intakes and exams remain, then complete the diploma.

Frequently asked questions
Is NC(V) better than NATED for university?
NC(V) Level 4 has national minimum admission rules for universities, so its route is clearer. N-qualifications are considered case by case.
Can I switch from NATED to NC(V)?
You can apply for an NC(V) programme at a college, but credits do not transfer automatically. Ask the college how it treats your N-results.
