Second-semester applications for 2026 have closed at most colleges, and the next mid-year intake will be for the second semester of 2027. Whether a college takes new students in July depends on the programme, because only some TVET programmes run in semesters.

Which programmes have a mid-year intake
| Programme | How it is structured | Mid-year intake? |
|---|---|---|
| NC(V) Levels 2 to 4 | One full academic year per level | No, NC(V) starts in January |
| NATED business studies N4 to N6 | Semesters (January and July) | Only while the phase-out allows new N4 students |
| NATED engineering N4 to N6 | Trimesters | Only where a phase-out intake remains |
| Occupational and skills programmes | Set per programme | Some colleges run mid-year intakes |
Why mid-year options are shrinking
The semester intake was built around the NATED N4 to N6 business courses, and those are being phased out. Sedibeng TVET College’s 2026 prospectus, for example, shows Semester 2 of 2026 as the last first opportunity for business studies N4 and N5. Other colleges follow the same Department of Higher Education and Training circular, with dates that can differ by college, so expect far fewer new N4 places in July 2027.
How to find a college with a July 2027 intake
- Check your nearest colleges’ websites from about April 2027 for second-semester notices.
- Ask the campus which programmes, if any, take first-time students mid-year.
- If you are already an N4 or N5 student, ask about your remaining examination opportunities and when you must finish.
- Look at occupational programmes too; see how NATED, NC(V) and occupational qualifications differ.
Colleges that have published second-semester pages include Thekwini TVET College and Ekurhuleni East TVET College.
NSFAS funds continuing students for the second semester if they meet the progression rules. New mid-year students must have a valid NSFAS application.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start the NC(V) in July?
No. The NC(V) is a year-long programme per level, and colleges enrol new NC(V) students at the start of the year.
When do second-semester applications open?
Colleges that run a mid-year intake usually open applications a few months before July. The dates are set by each college.
