UWC’s points system places extra value on English and Mathematics, and includes Life Orientation in a reduced capacity.
You calculate APS by assigning points to each subject based on your final mark, then adding the points together across seven subjects: English, Mathematics (or Mathematical Literacy), Life Orientation, and your four best other recognised subjects.
UWC requires a National Senior Certificate (NSC) recognised by Umalusi, and you must meet minimum subject pass requirements, such as a pass in English and other designated 20‑credit subjects, in addition to your APS total.
UWC APS Conversion Table (2027)
Here is how UWC converts NSC percentages into APS points for each subject:
| NSC Percentage | Points for English | Points for Maths or Maths Lit | Points for Life Orientation | Points for Other Subjects |
| 90‑100% | 15 | 15 | 3 | 8 |
| 80‑89% | 13 | 13 | 3 | 7 |
| 70‑79% | 11 | 11 | 2 | 6 |
| 60‑69% | 9 | 9 | 2 | 5 |
| 50‑59% | 7 | 7 | 2 | 4 |
| 40‑49% | 5 | 5 | 1 | 3 |
| 30‑39% | 3 | 3 | 1 | 2 |
| 20‑29% | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| <20% | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
You calculate your APS by adding points earned for each of your seven subjects.
English and Mathematics are weighted more heavily, so strong marks in these subjects significantly boost your total APS.
Step‑by‑Step Instructions to Calculate Your APS
- Collect Your Final NSC Results
After you receive your final Matric results, list your subject percentages for all subjects, including English, Mathematics (or Mathematical Literacy), and Life Orientation. - Assign Points to English and Mathematics
Use the table above to convert your English and Mathematics results into the weighted point values. - Assign Points for Life Orientation
Include Life Orientation in your seven subjects, but note that it contributes fewer points compared with core subjects. - Choose Your Four Best Other Subjects
Identify your four best academic subjects (excluding English, Mathematics, and Life Orientation) based on your NSC results. - Convert Each Subject to APS Points
Refer to the table above for each subject and add up all points from the seven subjects. - Check Your Total APS
Compare your total APS with the minimum requirements for your intended programme.
UWC APS Requirements for Law (LLB)
Entry into the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at UWC is highly competitive and has specific APS and subject requirements.
According to official programme requirements:
- Minimum APS: 37 points or higher as calculated using the weighted APS system.
- English Language Requirement: You must achieve at least Level 4 (50‑59%) in English (Home Language or First Additional Language).
- Other Language Requirement: You must achieve at least Level 3 (40‑49%) in another recognised language.
- Mathematics/Math Literacy Requirement: You must achieve at least Level 3 (40‑49%) in Mathematics or Level 5 (60‑69%) in Mathematical Literacy.
Meeting these minimums allows you to apply for the LLB programme.
Actual selection depends on your APS relative to other applicants, as there are limited spaces and competition can be intense.
UWC considers your APS in conjunction with subject performance in the selection process.
UWC APS Requirements for Science Degrees
For undergraduate Science programmes such as Bachelor of Science (BSc) and related health science qualifications, UWC applies the same weighted APS calculation with specific minimum requirements depending on the specialisation:
- Many general BSc programmes require a minimum APS of around 30 points or higher.
- Some specialised science degrees, such as advanced health science streams, can require higher APS totals (for example, health science programmes often demand 33 points or more).
- Minimum NSC subject levels usually include a pass in English and strong performances in Mathematics and relevant science subjects (like Life Sciences or Physical Sciences).
For example, allied science streams often list APS 30+ as a baseline requirement and may list higher APS scores for more competitive or specialised areas.
Subject Requirements and Programme Conditions
In addition to APS totals, UWC typically requires:
- English Pass: A minimum NSC achievement code in English is mandatory for all degree routes.
- Language Pass: At least one additional language at the required level is usually required for Law and other degrees.
- Mathematical Proficiency: Pure Mathematics is often required for many science degrees. Mathematical Literacy may be accepted for some streams, but may not meet entry requirements for all Science programmes.
Meeting these areas increases your competitiveness for selection to study at UWC.
