MUT Fees 2027: Registration and Tuition Fee Breakdown

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is a public university in Durban, KwaZulu‑Natal, South Africa.

MUT Application Fee 2027 (Non‑refundable)

Prospective students who wish to study at MUT must pay a non‑refundable application or acceptance fee when submitting their application. This fee confirms your intention to register once you are accepted.

• Application fee: R520 (the amount MUT set for the 2026 intake)
• Status: Non‑refundable; this amount is credited toward your fee account once registration is successful.

MUT charges this fee for every application it receives, so budget for it before you start. Use the payment reference MUT gives you during the application process so the fee is linked to your application.

MUT Registration Fee 2027 (Initial Payment)

Once accepted, you must pay a Minimum Initial Payment (MIP) before you can complete registration for the 2027 academic year. 

The MIP is made up of a deposit toward your tuition account plus two compulsory levies: the Student Representative Council (SRC) levy and the sports levy. The amounts below are MUT’s 2026 figures, the latest it has published; MUT released the 2026 schedule in December 2025, so look out for the 2027 memo before you pay. Students funded by NSFAS do not pay the MIP.

Minimum Initial Payment (MIP) Options

Option 1: Tuition Only (No Accommodation)

• Tuition Fee Deposit: R3 450 annual / R2 000 semester
• Student Levy: R430 annual / R215 semester
• Sport Levy: R120 annual / R60 semester
• Total Minimum Payable on Registration: R4 000 annual / R2 275 semester

Option 2: Tuition + Internal Residence

• Tuition Fee Deposit: R3 450 annual / R2 000 semester
• Internal Residence Deposit: R14 025 annual / R6 615 semester
• Student Levy: R430 annual / R215 semester
• Sport Levy: R120 annual / R60 semester
• Total Minimum Payable on Registration: R18 025 annual / R8 890 semester

Option 3: Tuition + External Residence or New Internal Residence

• Tuition Fee Deposit: R3 450 annual / R2 000 semester
• External Residence Deposit: R24 950 annual / R11 770 semester
• Student Levy: R430 annual / R215 semester
• Sport Levy: R120 annual / R60 semester
• Total Minimum Payable on Registration: R28 950 annual / R14 045 semester

These initial payments must be made before registration is permitted. 

They are credited toward your total tuition account for the academic year or semester.

MUT Tuition Fee Structure

MUT’s tuition fees vary by programme, modules taken and level of study. 

MUT prices tuition per module, so your bill depends on exactly which subjects you register for. For 2026 the university applied a 4% increase on 2025 module fees and a 6% increase on residence charges. 

The easiest way to estimate your tuition is to add up your modules using the official schedule:

• Download MUT’s 2026 Fees per Module list from the Student Fees page and total the fees for the modules in your programme for that year.

These fees cover your academic tuition but do not include residence fees, travel, meals, textbooks or other personal costs. 

Residence fees are charged on top of tuition and depend on the residence you are placed in. MUT publishes approved residence rates on its website, and the residence deposits in the MIP table above give a sense of the upfront amount.

How to Pay Your MUT Fees (Bank Details)

MUT accepts fee payments through secure electronic methods. 

All payments must include your student number as the reference to ensure correct allocation to your student account.

You can pay by EFT, direct bank deposit, debit order or debit/credit card (MUT does not accept American Express or Diners Club cards, or cheques). Make EFTs at least three days before your registration date so the money reflects in time. 

Proof of payment must be emailed to the Cashiers Office at student.debtors@mut.ac.za or delivered in person to ensure the payment is recorded.

MUT Fees for NSFAS Funded Students

If you qualify for funding through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), you must ensure your NSFAS award is approved before registration. 

Once confirmed, NSFAS will typically cover your tuition fees and the minimum initial payment directly to the university.

NSFAS funding does not automatically cover residence deposits or personal costs unless explicitly stated in your award letter, so confirm coverage with both NSFAS and MUT’s Financial Aid Office before registration begins.For NSFAS applications and confirmation, use the official portal.
