If you want to apply to study a diploma at VUT for the 2027 academic year, you must meet the Admission Point Score (APS) requirements and related subject conditions.

The APS shows how your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results are assessed for entry.

The Admission Point Score (APS) is a way universities measure your Grade 12 results.

VUT uses your top six subjects from the NSC (excluding Life Orientation) and converts them into points based on the mark you achieved.

The total APS score is then used to decide if you are eligible for a diploma.

Higher APS scores and specific subject passes may be needed for competitive programmes.

Step‑by‑Step Instructions to Calculate Your APS

  • Step 1: Collect your NSC subject marks
Once you have your final NSC results, write down the percentages you earned in your subjects. This must include your English mark.
  • Step 2: Use the VUT APS table below
Convert each subject percentage into APS points using the official VUT conversion table.
  • Step 3: Exclude Life Orientation
For most diploma qualifications, VUT does not include Life Orientation in your total APS score. Only your six best subjects count.
  • Step 4: Add the points of your six top subjects
Add up the APS points for your best six subjects (including your recognised language and required subjects like Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy if required).
  • Step 5: Compare your total APS with the diploma requirement
Each VUT diploma programme has a minimum APS requirement. Ensure your APS meets or exceeds this so you are eligible to apply.

VUT APS Conversion Table (NSC % to APS Points)

Use this table to convert your NSC subject percentages into APS points:

NSC PercentageAPS Points
90–100%8
80–89%7
70–79%6
60–69%5
50–59%4
40–49%3
30–39%2
0–29%1

Under this system, the highest points you can get for a subject is 8.

You should calculate the APS by taking your top six subjects except Life Orientation and adding their points.

Example APS Calculation
Suppose you have these NSC results:

  1. English: 65% (Level 5 → 5 points)
  2. Mathematics: 58% (Level 4 → 4 points)
  3. Physical Science: 72% (Level 6 → 6 points)
  4. Life Orientation: 60% (Level 5 → Not counted)
  5. Geography: 63% (Level 5 → 5 points)
  6. Accounting: 55% (Level 4 → 4 points)
  7. Business Studies: 61% (Level 5 → 5 points)

Your top six subjects excluding Life Orientation would be: 5 + 4 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 5 = 29 APS points.

This is your total APS score to be compared with specific programme requirements.

General Diploma Entry Requirements at VUT

For diplomas at Vaal University of Technology, most NSC holders must:

  1. Have a National Senior Certificate with a Diploma endorsement.
  2. Pass at least four recognised 20‑credit subjects at NSC level 3 or higher.
  3. Achieve the minimum APS score specified for the chosen diploma.
  4. Meet the language requirement, usually with at least Level 4 (50–59%) in English.
  5. Include required subjects such as Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy if needed.

Meeting the APS requirement does not guarantee admission. Students are selected based on limited space and programme demand.
