Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is a public university of technology in Vanderbijlpark, in the industrial Vaal Triangle south of Johannesburg. VUT has more than 23 000 students and 1 600 staff, and offers 39 programmes through four faculties: Applied and Computer Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Human Sciences, and Management Sciences.

An industrial setting

VUT grew from the Vaal Triangle Technikon and became a university of technology in 2004. Its location in a region built around steel, chemicals and manufacturing shapes its focus, and VUT describes its aim as “leading innovation for a digitally-smart industrial transformation”. For engineering and technology students, nearby factories offer opportunities for the work-integrated learning that many diplomas require.

Short courses and graduation

Besides formal degrees and diplomas, VUT offers short learning programmes that build practical skills quickly for personal or professional growth. VUT streams its graduation ceremonies live, so families who cannot travel to Vanderbijlpark can watch.

Fees and funding

VUT publishes estimated tuition costs and additional fees for specific courses, but stresses that these are guidelines, and students receive actual fees on their statements after registration. International students must pay 100% of fees upfront, including residence. VUT’s financial aid pages bring together information on bursaries, scholarships, grants and loans.

Two closing dates at VUT

VUT opened 2027 applications on 9 June 2026. General undergraduate, postgraduate diploma and honours applications close on 31 October 2026, while programmes such as teaching, safety management, labour law, IT, logistics and agricultural management close on 31 August 2026. Master’s and doctoral applications generally close by 10 November 2026. VUT’s guide requires an APS of at least 26 from the top six subjects for many programmes.
