Admission Requirements for 2027

To be eligible for undergraduate admission at VUT in 2027, you must meet both statutory minimum requirements and qualification‑specific entry criteria:

  1. You must hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent qualification certified by Umalusi.
  2. For Bachelor’s degrees, you must typically achieve an NSC with a recognised pass and meet the minimum Admission Point Score (APS) required by the qualification.
  3. Diploma or Higher Certificate programmes require the NSC with passes in recognised subjects and a suitable APS.
  4. English (Home or First Additional Language) must be passed at a level that satisfies the minimum language requirement.
  5. VUT may consider applicants based on recognised prior learning, equivalence, or mature age status where applicable.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee placement because selection depends on programme demand and available space.

Minimum Points Needed for Different Faculties

Vaal University of Technology uses an Admission Point Score (APS) system to assess applicants.

The APS is calculated from your NSC subject results and indicates whether you meet the academic entry threshold for your chosen qualification.

While exact APS values differ by programme:

  1. Engineering and Technology programmes usually require a stronger APS with good Mathematics and Physical Sciences results.
  2. Applied and Computer Sciences fields require solid Mathematics or equivalent results.
  3. Management Sciences qualifications look for good performance in quantitative and language subjects.
  4. Human Sciences keep moderate APS thresholds but still require good overall academic performance.

Exact APS requirements and subject prerequisites are listed in the VUT prospectus for each programme.

Always check the official document to confirm the scores you need.

Compulsory Subjects

Compulsory subject requirements depend on the qualification you want to study:

  1. English (Home or First Additional Language) is required for all undergraduate programmes because it is the language of learning and teaching.
  2. Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy is often needed for science, engineering, business, and technology programmes.
  3. Physical Sciences or Life Sciences may be required for specific science or engineering degrees.
  4. Other subjects are required based on the faculty and programme as listed in the prospectus.

Always refer to the prospectus programme sections to confirm the exact subject requirements for the qualification you plan to apply for.

How to Calculate Your 2027 APS

Your Admission Point Score (APS) is based on your NSC subject results. To calculate your APS:

  1. Select your top six subjects (usually excluding Life Orientation).
  2. Convert each subject’s achievement level into points using the university’s APS scale, where higher achievement earns more points.
  3. Add the points for your top subjects, including English and any required subjects for your qualification.

The total APS shows whether you meet or exceed the minimum requirement for the programme you want to study. Refer to the prospectus APS tables for exact scoring details.

2027 Application Opening and Closing Dates

VUT usually opens undergraduate applications well ahead of the academic year.

For the 2026 intake, the application closing date for most programmes was 31 October 2025, though some specific programmes closed earlier.

The 2027 dates will be published on the official VUT admissions pages once confirmed.

You should check the university website regularly for the definitive opening and closing dates and submit your application early to ensure it is processed before the deadline.

Funding & Bursaries

Financial support at VUT includes institutional bursaries, merit‑based awards, need‑based funding, and scholarships.

Many South African students also apply for support from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) if they meet eligibility criteria.

The VUT prospectus and financial aid pages list available bursaries, eligibility rules, and application procedures.

Research external bursaries as well to expand your funding options.
