After applying for funding, every applicant must track their application status to see whether they have been approved, rejected, or asked to submit additional documents.

The easiest way to check your NSFAS status is by using your South African ID number through the official myNSFAS system.

For the 2026 academic year, NSFAS continues to use its online portal, WhatsApp service, USSD code, and call centre to allow students to track their funding progress.

The Application Flow Statuses

When you log in and check your NSFAS status, you may see one of the following common statuses:

  1. Application Submitted
This means your application has been successfully received by NSFAS but has not yet been fully processed.
  2. Pending
NSFAS is still verifying your financial and academic information. This stage can take time during peak periods.
  3. Provisionally Funded
You meet the initial funding requirements. NSFAS is usually waiting for your institution to confirm your registration before final approval.
  4. Approved or Funded
Your funding has been finalised. NSFAS will pay your tuition and approved allowances according to its payment schedule.
  5. Incomplete or Awaiting Documents
You must upload missing documents to your myNSFAS portal. If you do not submit them within the allowed time, your application may not be processed further.
  6. Rejected
Your application did not meet the funding requirements. You may submit an appeal if you believe the decision was incorrect and you have supporting evidence.

Understanding these statuses helps you know what action to take after checking your ID number online.

Enter your ID number and follow the reset instructions sent to your registered contact details. Make sure your email address and cellphone number are correct and active.

If you no longer have access to them, you may need to contact the NSFAS call centre for assistance.

How Long Does NSFAS Take to Update Status?

Processing times vary each year depending on the number of applications received.

During peak periods, it may take several weeks for a status to change from Pending to Approved or Provisionally Funded.

Institutions must also confirm student registration before final funding is released.

It is advisable to check your status regularly, but avoid logging in excessively in a short period.

What Should I Do If My NSFAS Status Says Rejected?

If your status shows Rejected, review the reason provided in your myNSFAS portal

If you believe the decision was incorrect or your circumstances have changed, you may submit an appeal through your account.

Upload clear supporting documents before the appeal deadline set by NSFAS.

Appeals submitted after the closing date are usually not considered.

Can I Check NSFAS Status Without Applying?

No. You can only check a status if you have already submitted an application for the relevant academic year.

If you have not applied, you must wait for the official NSFAS application period to open and submit your application through the myNSFAS portal.

Why Is My NSFAS Status Not Showing?

If your status is not appearing, it could mean your application was not successfully submitted, the system is temporarily offline, or you entered incorrect login details.

Double-check your ID number and password. If the issue continues, contact the NSFAS call centre at 08000 67327 during office hours for support.
