For this reason, the official 2026 fee figures published by the university are used here as the most recent reference.

UP is commonly called Tukkies and is one of South Africa’s largest research universities.

Students must make a registration payment (also called the initial fee) before they can register for classes.

Application Fee 2027 (Non-refundable)

When you apply to study at the University of Pretoria, you are required to pay an application fee.

This fee is non-refundable, meaning it cannot be returned whether your application is successful or not.

For 2026, the official UP fees page shows that the application fee for admission was R300 for all applicants, including South African citizens and international applicants.

This fee helps cover administrative costs associated with processing your application.

While 2027 figures are not yet published, you should expect a similar amount and confirm the exact fee when you submit your application through the official UP application portal.

Registration Fee 2027 (Initial Payment)

At the University of Pretoria, the registration fee typically refers to the first payment required before you can register for your modules in the new academic year.

For 2026, the official UP student fees schedule states that:

  • Undergraduate students must pay an initial fee of R11 000 before registration is possible.
  • Postgraduate students must pay an initial fee of R13 500 before registration can take place.

International students (non-SADC citizens) are required to make a larger initial payment before registration, often R40 000 for undergraduate programmes, while postgraduate international students must pay 50 percent of their total annual fees before they can register.

This initial payment is part of your total annual charge and is not an extra fee.

It acts as a deposit and a minimum payment that ensures you are financially cleared to begin your academic year.

UP policy usually requires that this fee is paid at least 5 days before registration to allow processing.

It is important to check the official When to Pay What page on the UP website or the official 2027 fee book once released, as the amounts may increase.

Tuition Fee Structure per Faculty

The University of Pretoria charges tuition fees per module or course you register for.

There is no flat annual fee that covers all study programmes. Instead, the total tuition is the sum of fees for all your modules in a given year.

This structure applies to both undergraduate and postgraduate study.

UP’s official undergraduate fee page shows that complete fee tables are released closer to the start of the academic year.

Once the official 2027 fee tables are published, students will be able to see exact costs for tuition per faculty.

For example, in the 2025 data, estimated tuition annual fee ranges (for undergraduate students) varied by faculty, with programmes in Commerce, Law, Science, and Health Sciences each having different annual costs.

Official UP policy requires that 50 percent of your total student account must be paid by 30 April, and 100 percent by 31 July each year.

A 2.5 percent discount is often offered if you pay your fees in full by the 30 April deadline.

How to Pay Your Fees (Bank Details)

The University of Pretoria provides official banking details for student payments.

All payments for tuition and the registration fee should be made into the UP student fees bank account using your student number as the payment reference.

This ensures the funds are allocated to your account correctly.

Here are the official bank details used by UP:

Account Name: University of Pretoria – Student Fees
Bank: Standard Bank South Africa
Branch: Hatfield or main branch as specified by the university
Branch Code: Contact fees office or portal for the exact code for the current year
Account Number: Students are advised to check the UP Portal for the current account number before making payments so they are not using outdated details

Always confirm the correct banking details on the official UP Student Fees page before making any payments, as the university may change accounts or reference codes.

The application fee may be paid into a different account specifically for applications.

Fees for NSFAS Funded Students

If you are funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), UP works with NSFAS to settle your tuition and registration fee on your behalf.

Students with confirmed NSFAS funding do not need to pay the initial registration payment themselves, provided that the university has received your funding confirmation before the registration deadline.

Once NSFAS is approved, the scheme usually pays the tuition charges directly to the university.

NSFAS can also cover other study-related costs such as textbooks, accommodation and learning allowances, depending on your funding package.

It is critical that your NSFAS application is completed and approved before registration so your account is cleared.

If you have outstanding historical debt or your NSFAS confirmation arrives late, UP may require you to make alternative payment arrangements or settle part of your fees before you can register.

This is handled through the UP Fees Office in consultation with NSFAS.
