The University of Johannesburg (UJ), one of South Africa’s largest public universities, invites online applications for undergraduate and postgraduate study for the 2026 academic year.

This guide outlines how to apply, admission criteria, deadlines, and document requirements, based solely on UJ’s official sources.

When can I apply to UJ?

Applications for the 2026 academic year open on 1 April 2025 via the official UJ online portal (“New Applicant → Apply Here”) on www.uj.ac.za.

What are the application deadlines?

For both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the standard closing date is 31 October 2025 at 12:00 noon.

Some postgraduate programmes across faculties such as Engineering, Education, and Humanities close earlier (e.g. between 13 June and 30 September 2025).

What are the admission requirements?

  1. Undergraduate applicants must have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent. Each faculty stipulates minimum APS thresholds and compulsory subjects.
  2. International applicants must provide certified documents, exemption from USAf (if required), and proof of English proficiency such as IELTS (overall score 6) or TOEFL (80–104), or UJELP score.
  3. Postgraduate applicants require a completed undergraduate degree, transcripts, and some programmes require additional materials such as proposals or CVs.

How do I submit my application online?

  1. Visit www.uj.ac.za → Admissions + Aid → Undergraduate or Postgraduate → New Applicant: Apply Here.
  2. Register using a valid email address, complete required sections, and upload documents.
  3. Applicants may select up to two study choices per application, and these cannot be changed later.

What documents must I upload?

  1. Certified ID/passport copy (international applicants).
  2. Final Grade 11 or June Grade 12 results (Grade 12 results if available).
  3. Academic transcripts for transfers or postgraduate study.
  4. Supporting documents such as exemption certificates (USAf) or English proficiency evidence.

Is there an application fee?

Online applications for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are free of charge.

Hardcopy postgraduate applications incur a R200 fee.

How will I receive application updates?

Upon submission, you receive a confirmation email containing a reference/student number.
