For the 2027 academic year, admission to these programmes depends on your Admission Point Score (APS) based on your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.

MUT uses a points-based system to assess whether applicants meet the minimum academic criteria required by each faculty.

How to Calculate Your MUT APS

To calculate your APS for MUT for 2027, follow these steps:

  1. Collect your NSC results: After completing Grade 12, gather your final results showing the percentages you achieved in each subject.
  2. List your subjects: Include your language subjects (including English), Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and other recognised subjects.
  3. Convert each percentage to APS points: Use the MUT APS conversion table below to convert each subject mark into points.
  4. Select your best six subjects: MUT typically calculates the APS based on your six best academic subjects. Life Orientation has a special rule (explained below).
  5. Add up the points: Add the points from each of your six top subjects to get your total APS score.
  6. Compare with programme requirements: Check the minimum APS required for your chosen qualification and make sure you meet the subject minimums where applicable.

MUT APS Points Table (NSC % to Points)

MUT uses a specialised point conversion scale for NSC achievement levels.

Life Orientation is treated differently and may contribute a bonus point if you score at or above a certain level.

NSC PercentageAPS Points
90–100%8
80–89%7
70–79%6
60–69%5
50–59%4
40–49%3
0–39%0

Notes on this conversion table:

  • Life Orientation: Achieving NSC Level 4 (50%) or higher in Life Orientation awards 1 point in your APS total. This is a special bonus point separate from the six subject scores.
  • Subjects with marks below 40% generally score 0 APS points and are not helpful for admission eligibility.

Example APS Calculation

Suppose your NSC results are:

  1. English Home Language: 65% → 5 points
  2. Mathematics: 58% → 4 points
  3. Physical Science: 61% → 5 points
  4. Geography: 72% → 6 points
  5. Accounting: 55% → 4 points
  6. Life Sciences: 63% → 5 points
  7. Life Orientation: 55% → 1 bonus point

Using the table above, your APS calculation would be: 5 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 4 + 5 = 29 APS.

Plus Life Orientation bonus: +1 → Total: 30 APS

This APS total can then be compared with the minimum requirement for the qualification you want to apply for at MUT.
