VerifiedMangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in Umlazi takes first-year applications through the Central Applications Office (CAO). It scores NSC subjects on an 8-point scale and never counts Life Orientation. MUT had not published a 2027 prospectus when we checked, so the minimums below come from the CAO Handbook for 2027 entry, MUT’s admission requirements page and its 2026 faculty prospectuses.

How to calculate your MUT APS
- Convert each subject mark into points with the table below.
- Leave out Life Orientation.
- Add your top six subjects, the default the CAO handbook and MUT’s IT entry use. MUT’s own admission page says best five, so work out both and check with MUT if you are close to a cut-off.

MUT’s table stops at 40%; it does not publish points for lower marks.
Example
English 58% (4), isiZulu 66% (5), Mathematics 52% (4), Accounting 61% (5), Business Studies 55% (4) and Life Sciences 48% (3) give 25 on the top-six rule, enough for the Diploma in Accounting (25). On the best-five rule the same marks give 22.
General requirements
- An NSC with a diploma pass (a bachelor’s pass for the two degrees below).
- English Home Language or First Additional Language at level 4; Human Resource Management, Marketing and IT accept English Home Language at level 3.
- Some programmes add entrance or placement tests, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.

Mechanical Engineering also needs Engineering Graphics and Design or Technical Drawing at level 4. MUT does not offer a diploma in biomedical science; its Biomedical Sciences department teaches the Medical Laboratory Science degree.
Faculties
MUT has three faculties: Engineering, Management Sciences, and Applied and Health Sciences, which includes Information Technology.
Applying for 2027
All MUT first-semester programmes for 2027 close on the CAO on 30 September 2026. The CAO fee for South Africans is R250 (R300 for international applicants), and changing your choices later costs R140. Use MUT’s CAO institution code MN when you list your choices. See also our MUT fees guide.
