UJ is a large public university in South Africa with multiple campuses and a structured fee payment system that includes application requirements, registration deposits, tuition charges per module, payment procedures and NSFAS funding arrangements.

Students should always verify official 2027 figures on the UJ Student Finance pages once they are released.

Application Fee 2027 (Non-refundable)

When applying to study at the University of Johannesburg, most applicants do not pay an online application fee.

According to official UJ guidance, online applications are free for all prospective students, including both South African and international applicants.

If you choose to submit a manual or paper application, a non-refundable fee of R200.00 may be charged.

The application fee (if applicable) is paid when you submit your application and is non-refundable regardless of whether you are offered a place or not.

Fees associated with application processing do not contribute toward your tuition or registration obligations once you are admitted.

Prospective students should check the official UJ application portal or updates on the UJ admissions website for the exact application fee status for 2027, as the university may adjust fee policies by year.

Registration Fee 2027 (Initial Payment)

At the University of Johannesburg, students must pay a registration deposit (also called the initial fee) before they can register for classes in the academic year.

Based on the 2026 official UJ fee book, the initial payment required before registration for most self-funded students was as follows:

  • Day students (non-residence) (minimum payment before or at registration): R5 950.00
  • Residence students (with residence acceptance) (minimum payment before or at registration): R9 850.00

These amounts are part of the total tuition and related fees you will owe for the year.

They are not separate extra fees but act as a minimum upfront deposit to allow access to registration.

In addition to the initial deposit, UJ collects a non-refundable registration levy and an ICT levy, which apply each year at registration.

For 2026 the registration levy and ICT levy totaled around R1 040.00 combined according to UJ’s international pre-arrival guide.

Students who register late may also incur a late registration fee in addition to these charges.

UJ requires that all payments be cleared or reflected in your student account before you are permitted to complete your official registration.

Tuition Fee Structure per Faculty

The University of Johannesburg does not publish one flat tuition fee that applies to all programmes.

Instead, tuition is charged on a per module or course basis.

This means your total annual tuition depends on the number of modules you take and the faculty in which you are enrolled.

Tuition fees vary widely across faculties such as Commerce, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Science and Education.

Each faculty’s specific fees are published in the UJ Fees Booklet and the student portal.

Until the official 2027 fee booklet is released, the 2026 amounts should be used as a guide.

  • Undergraduate programmes: Tuition is charged per module, and the cost per module can differ depending on the level and faculty. Students must settle fees for all modules they intend to register for.
  • Postgraduate programmes: Similar to undergraduate study, postgraduate tuition is charged per module or research credit, depending on the qualification (for example honours, masters or doctoral). International postgraduate students may be required to pay a proportion of their fees before registration as part of UJ’s upfront payment policy.

Additional compulsory charges, such as the ICT levy, may be added to your fee account each year.

These costs support campus technology infrastructure used by all students.

How to Pay Your Fees (Bank Details)

UJ requires that all student fees be paid into the official UJ student fee account.

You must use your student number as the payment reference so that funds are automatically allocated to your account.

For students who pay tuition and registration deposits, the university uses the following banking details:

Account Name: University of Johannesburg – Student Fees
Bank: First National Bank (FNB)
Account Number: 626 158 73199
Branch Code: 632005
SWIFT Code: FIRNZAJJ

For payments made within South Africa, students can use electronic funds transfer (EFT), deposit cash at an ATM linked to the university account, or use the UJ e-Payment online portal. All payments must reflect on your UJ student account prior to finalising registration.

It is critical to confirm the correct banking details and reference numbers on the official UJ Student Finance page before making any payment, as account numbers may change over time.

Fees for NSFAS Funded Students

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funds eligible South African students from households with lower incomes.

If you qualify for NSFAS funding and it is approved before registration, NSFAS will pay your tuition and registration deposits directly to UJ on your behalf.

NSFAS funding can also include allowances for accommodation, books and other educational expenses depending on your funding package.

You must ensure that your NSFAS funding is confirmed and submitted to UJ before registration deadlines so that your account is cleared.

If you have historical debt from a previous year, you may need to make arrangements with the UJ Fees Office before NSFAS can clear your account and allow registration.
