It offers a range of undergraduate degrees across faculties like Humanities, Management and Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences, and Education. Most students applying for UL want to know if they must take the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) to be admitted for the 2027 academic year.

Are NBTs Compulsory for UL Undergraduate Admission in 2027?

No. As of the latest official guidelines, UL does not require the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) as a compulsory condition for entry into its standard undergraduate degree programmes for 2027.

Admission is mainly based on your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results with a Bachelor’s pass and the required Admission Point Score (APS) for your chosen field of study.

The NBT is not used as a formal requirement for most applicants at UL.

Faculties Where NBTs Might Be Considered

While the NBT is generally not required for UL undergraduate admissions, there are some exceptions you should be aware of:

  1. UL conducts national benchmarking tests for research and to allocate academic support if needed, but this is for internal placement and development rather than formal entry. These tests help UL identify areas where additional academic support might be necessary for new students.
  2. Some competitive or extended programmes may use placement tests (which could include benchmarking tests) to place students in extended curriculum routes where extra support is required. These are not compulsory for standard admission but are important for programme placement if your APS or NSC results are borderline.
  3. If you apply to health sciences or medical programmes like medicine or nursing, most universities in South Africa require the NBT, but UL’s official admissions documentation does not list an NBT as a formal requirement for general undergraduate courses unless specifically stated in the programme guidelines. Always check the specific faculty prospectus to confirm.

Because official UL documentation does not list NBT requirements for mainstream undergraduate programmes, applicants should treat the NBT as optional unless otherwise stated by the faculty or programme.

Comparison Between NBT Scores and APS Scores

APS (Admission Point Score) is the key metric UL uses to decide if you qualify for a chosen undergraduate programme.

Your APS is calculated from your NSC results by converting your achievement levels (such as NSC subject ratings) into points and adding the highest six subjects (excluding Life Orientation).

To be eligible, you must obtain a minimum APS and the required subject levels as outlined by the faculty.

Your English score must meet UL’s language policy, and specific subject requirements vary by programme.

By contrast, NBT scores are not part of the APS calculation at UL.

UL does not use NBT results to calculate your admission score or to approve your entry to the university for most programmes.

The tests are primarily used for informal research and placement support.

If you do choose to write the NBT for other university applications, UL will not include these results in its APS evaluation.

In summary:

  • APS scores reflect your NSC performance and directly determine eligibility and selection at UL.
  • NBT scores are separate and do not influence the APS or act as a main admission requirement at UL for most courses.

How to Register for the National Benchmark Tests (NBT)

Even though UL does not require the NBT for most mainstream programmes, you may choose to write the test if you plan to apply to other universities that do require it.

To register:

  1. Visit the official National Benchmark Test Project website. Go to the registration section.
  2. Create an account with your personal details and a valid email address.
  3. Select the test components you need. All applicants usually write Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL). If your programme or other universities require mathematics skills, register for the Mathematics test (MAT) too.
  4. Choose a test date and venue from the options available in South Africa.
  5. Pay the registration fee and confirm your booking.
  6. Use your NBT reference number when applying to institutions that accept or require NBT results.

Keep in mind that NBT results are often valid for more than one admissions cycle, so you usually only need to write them once if submitting results to multiple universities.

How to Apply to UL for 2027 Undergraduate Study

To apply to the University of Limpopo for the 2027 academic year:

  1. Apply online through the official UL application portal or the prospectus application link.
  2. Pay the application handling fee, typically required to process your form. This is usually around R200 for South African applicants and higher for international applicants.
  3. Provide your NSC results or proof of your matriculation results once available.
  4. Ensure you meet the APS and subject requirements for the qualification you are applying for. Passing Life Orientation with the required level is essential, though it may not count towards the APS point total.
  5. Submit all required documentation before the deadline. Application deadlines for most undergraduate programmes are usually around September of the year before study begins, but health sciences often have earlier closing dates. Always check the latest UL prospectus.

After submitting your application, monitor your application status through the UL admissions portal and respond to any requests for additional information from the university.
