Many prospective students want to know whether writing the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) is part of the admission process for the 2027 academic year.

Are NBTs Compulsory for UMP Admission in 2027?

Yes. The University of Mpumalanga requires applicants to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) if they want their application to be considered for undergraduate admission.

UMP’s online application instructions and some official admissions guides state that applicants must take the NBT before being considered for admission to its programmes.

Applicants are expected to complete and submit their NBT results along with their application documentation.

List of Faculties or Programmes Where NBTs Apply

At UMP, the NBT requirement applies broadly to undergraduate programmes. This means:

  1. All faculties generally expect applicants to have written the NBTs as part of the admissions process.
  2. Agriculture and Natural Sciences, including programmes like the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, fall under this requirement.
  3. Commerce, Management, Humanities, Education and other degree and diploma programmes also require NBT submission for full application processing.

There are no clear faculty exemptions published in the official or admissions guidance. All first‑time undergraduate applicants should plan to take the NBT before final selection decisions are made.

Comparison Between NBT Scores and APS Scores

At UMP, your Admission Point Score (APS) is a key academic measure used in decision‑making.

APS is calculated from your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.

It reflects your performance in your core subjects and indicates whether you meet the minimum academic thresholds for your chosen qualification.

Higher APS points improve your chances of admission.

NBT scores are separate from APS calculations. The NBTs assess your academic literacy, quantitative literacy, and mathematics readiness independently of your school performance.

While APS determines whether you meet UMP’s baseline academic requirements, taking the NBT and submitting your results is a formal admission guideline at UMP.

The NBT result does not contribute points to your APS total but is used alongside APS and subject results when the university processes your application for the 2027 academic year.

Here is the difference in function:

  • APS scores reflect how well you performed in your NSC subjects and determine whether you meet programme entry criteria.
  • NBT results show national benchmark readiness and are required by UMP to assess whether you are academically ready for university study.

How to Register for the National Benchmark Tests (NBT)

If you need to take the NBTs for UMP or other universities:

  1. Visit the official NBT website at nbt.ac.za and go to the registration section.
  2. Create an applicant account with your valid email and personal details.
  3. Select the test modules you need: Most applicants register for the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test. If a programme requires mathematics readiness, register for the Mathematics (MAT) test as well.
  4. Choose a test date and centre from available options across South Africa.
  5. Pay the registration fee and confirm your booking.
  6. Save your NBT reference number and include it when completing your UMP application so the university can access your results.

NBT results remain valid for more than one entry cycle, so writing the tests once can serve multiple university applications if required.

How to Apply to UMP for 2027

To apply to the University of Mpumalanga:

  1. Visit the official UMP online application portal once applications open (generally from April to November each year).
  2. Complete the online application form with your personal details, NSC subject results, and programme choices.
  3. Upload required documents including certified copies of your ID or passport, NSC results, and your NBT result.
  4. Pay the non‑refundable application fee as stipulated by UMP.
  5. Submit before the closing date for undergraduate applications, which typically runs through November of the year preceding academic entry.
  6. Monitor your application status through the UMP portal and respond quickly to any requests for additional information.

Meeting the minimum APS and subject requirements does not guarantee admission, as selection depends on competition and space in your chosen programme.
