Valterra Platinum Graduate Programme

Valterra Platinum, the platinum group metals producer that operated as Anglo American Platinum until its demerger from Anglo American, runs a graduate programme for new Honours-level graduates in mining, engineering and science. Valterra describes it as structured learning, technical exposure and on-the-job coaching that prepares graduates for full-time roles in the business. It is paid employment on a fixed programme, separate from the company’s study funding, which is covered on our Valterra Platinum bursary page.

Valterra says graduate applications “generally open mid-year” and that dates are announced on its careers site and social media. At the end of September 2026 its recruitment portal carried no graduate programme advert, and Valterra had not published dates for the next intake.

Honours-level disciplines Valterra recruits

Applicants need a completed recognised Honours-level qualification (NQF level 8), or must be in the final year of one, in a discipline Valterra advertises that year. A strong academic record helps, as does evidence of leadership or community involvement. The technical disciplines Valterra lists are:

• Mining Engineering;
• Geomatics, in mine surveying or geographic information systems (GIS);
• Geotechnical (rock) engineering;
• Mechanical, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, and Mechatronics;
• Chemistry;
• Chemical Engineering or Metallurgy.

Support-function graduates in people and organisation (HR), information management (IT), commercial (finance) and corporate affairs and social investment are taken on only in some years, and Valterra tells candidates to watch its official channels for those.

Two to three years across North West and Limpopo operations

The programme runs for 24 months, or up to 36 months in some disciplines. Graduates rotate across the value chain of their discipline at Valterra’s operations in the North West and Limpopo. Valterra lists what the programme includes as structured technical training, professional development workshops, rotations through operational areas, coaching and mentoring, and work on business improvement or innovation projects. Where it applies, Valterra supports graduates working towards professional registration, such as with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

A permanent job at the end is not guaranteed. Valterra states that placement depends on performance and business needs, and that high-performing graduates get first claim on available permanent posts. Its bursary holders owe a work-back period for each year of funding, and Valterra says they get priority for graduate placement.

Applying online when the window opens

Valterra accepts graduate applications online only, through its careers portal. Its FAQ lists an ID, academic transcripts and proof of residence among the supporting documents. The Young Talent page is where the company posts programme information.

Graduates without an Honours degree have other entry points on the same portal. In late September 2026 Valterra was advertising Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Internship Programme posts at the Mogalakwena complex near Mokopane for holders of a completed degree, BTech or diploma, closing on 1 October 2026. Those adverts require a full academic transcript, and applicants from host communities must attach proof of residence stamped by the tribal office or municipality.
