No Ampath learnership or technical internship was advertised on the Ampath careers portal on 29 September 2026, and Ampath gives no intake dates.

Ampath Laboratories, the pathology group run under the direction of more than 140 pathologists, trains some of its own blood-collection staff through a two-year Phlebotomy Technician Learnership. The same careers section describes technical internships for laboratory graduates who need supervised work to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Ampath recruits for both through its online careers portal, and when we checked that portal on 29 September 2026 neither programme was being advertised.

Two years learning to draw blood in a working laboratory

Ampath defines phlebotomy as drawing blood from the circulatory system through a puncture, to obtain a sample for analysis and diagnosis or, in some cases, to treat certain blood disorders. Ampath’s adverts for qualified phlebotomists describe the job as collecting blood and non-blood specimens safely and accurately, with the patient interaction treated as part of the service.

Ampath’s learnership page gives these facts about the programme:

  • it runs for two years;
  • learners are trained in a medical laboratory;
  • the training mixes classroom learning with workplace learning;
  • the programme “offers the opportunity for permanent employment” with Ampath once it is completed.

The page does not list school subjects, an age limit, a monthly allowance or the qualification the learner receives. Those details, if Ampath sets them, would appear in the advert for a specific intake, so read the advert itself rather than relying on a summary elsewhere.

Technical internships toward HPCSA registration

The second route is for people who have already studied. Ampath says medical technologists, medical laboratory scientists, medical technicians, laboratory assistants and medical scientists form the core of its technical staff, analysing patient samples whose results help doctors diagnose and treat patients. The HPCSA regulates the scope of these professions, and Ampath presents its technical internship as the place to achieve registration as a Medical Technology or Medical Science practitioner. Ampath names the qualification behind each role:

RoleQualification Ampath names
Medical TechnologistNational Diploma (ND) Biomedical Technology
Medical Laboratory ScientistBachelor of Health Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BHSc MLS)
Medical TechnicianCertificate for Medical Technician
Laboratory AssistantCertificate for Laboratory Assistant

Ampath does not publish the length of the internship, the stipend or how many places it offers. If you are still choosing a course and want funding for a biomedical or laboratory science qualification first, our list of health science bursaries covers funders in that area.

What the Ampath careers portal showed in late September

The “Available learnerships” button on Ampath’s website opens the same Ampath careers portal on Wamly that carries every Ampath vacancy. On 29 September 2026 it listed 12 posts, among them qualified phlebotomist posts in Pretoria, Bloemfontein and the Eastern Cape, a medical laboratory scientist contract in genetics, couriers and finance clerks. None was a learnership or internship, and Ampath gives no date for the next intake.

The portal explains how Ampath’s recruitment works once an advert is live:

  1. You apply online against a specific post; a confirmation screen appears when the application is submitted.
  2. Applications cannot be edited after submission, so check your information and documents first.
  3. Depending on the role, the process can include screening against the job’s inherent requirements, video interviews, skills assessments and in-person interviews.
  4. Only shortlisted candidates may be contacted.

Ampath states that it never asks for upfront payments, administration fees or processing fees for recruitment, learnerships or training programmes. Anyone asking for money to secure an Ampath learnership place is not acting for Ampath. For help with an application, Ampath asks candidates to email talent@ampath.co.za quoting the position’s reference number, or to call 012 678 1300.

Another health-sector learnership on this site with a clear route into a registered role is the Dis-Chem pharmacist assistant learnership, and hospital group Netcare funds studies through the Netcare bursary.
