Khumani is Assmang’s iron ore mine near Kathu in the Northern Cape, one of the biggest iron ore operations in the country. Its bursary is generous and unusually simple to apply for: there is no form, just a set of documents emailed to the mine’s recruitment office, and it accepts applications in any field while prioritising the technical disciplines the mine employs.

Mining-related fields: electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, mine surveying, occupational hygiene and environmental health, occupational therapy, and rock engineering or geotechnical studies.
Applications in other fields are also accepted.
Covers registration fees, tuition, prescribed books and textbooks, a laptop, accommodation, meals and a monthly allowance.
