Assmang is the joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Assore that runs the Black Rock manganese mines near Kuruman, the Khumani iron ore mine and chrome operations in Limpopo. It funds engineering and technical students for its own operations, and it also co-funds a much broader bursary with the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality for students from the surrounding communities.

About the Assmang bursaries

Mine bursary fields: mining, mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, mine surveying, geology and rock engineering.
Joint municipal bursary fields: commerce (accounting, economics, law, human resources, business management), public administration, journalism and communications, psychology, social work, education, LLB, actuarial science, agriculture, architecture, engineering, geology, quantity surveying, computer science, pharmacy, nursing, medicine and town and regional planning. Five bursaries are awarded.
Covers registration and tuition fees, prescribed books, accommodation, meals and a monthly allowance, with vacation work at the mine for the technical bursars.

Assmang Bursary eligibility requirements

South African citizen with strong Matric results, studying or accepted at an accredited public institution.
Preference for residents of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District: the Gamagara, Ga-Segonyana and Joe Morolong local municipalities.
Joint municipal bursary: restricted to Ga-Segonyana residents aged 18 to 35, with at least a 60% Matric average, or Level 5 in Mathematics and Physical Science for science fields.
Financial need, and no other bursary funding.

How to apply

Mine bursary: apply online on Assmang’s recruitment portal at assmang.ci.hr when the listing opens.
Joint municipal bursary: download the form from ga-segonyana.gov.za and hand-deliver or post it to the Municipal Manager, Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, corner of Voortrekker and School Streets, Kuruman 8460.
Attach a certified ID, certified Matric results, a tertiary academic record on the institution’s letterhead, proof of university acceptance, your parents’ proof of income and proof of residence.

Closing dates

12 December 2025 for the mine bursary and 28 November 2025 for the joint municipal bursary, both for 2026. Expect similar dates late in 2026 for 2027.
