Readers should treat the details below as a starting point and confirm everything with Assmang or the relevant mine before applying.

Bursaries run mine by mine

Assmang does not advertise one national bursary. Each operation runs its own programme. Past adverts show that Assmang bursaries have covered fields from engineering to environmental sciences, and that successful applicants received registration and tuition fees, textbooks, a laptop, accommodation, meals and a monthly allowance.

The Khumani mine near Kathu has used an unusually simple process: applicants emailed a set of documents to the mine’s recruitment office instead of completing a form. The last Khumani round BursariesAfrica could confirm closed on 25 November 2024. The Black Rock manganese bursary closed on 12 December 2025 for 2026 study.

Bursaries shared with municipalities

Some Assmang money reaches students through local government. Assmang and the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality ran a joint bursary that closed on 28 November 2025. Joe Morolong Local Municipality, which covers the villages around Hotazel, Churchill and Heuningvlei, runs a bursary funded by Assmang’s Black Rock operations; that round also closed on 28 November 2025.

How to check an Assmang bursary yourself

None of the 2027 Assmang calls had been published when BursariesAfrica last checked. Recent rounds opened between October and December, so students from Kathu, Kuruman, Hotazel and nearby villages should watch notices from the mines and from the Ga-Segonyana and Joe Morolong municipal offices from October 2026. Ask the mine directly whether the bursary carries a work-back requirement, because Assmang’s public material does not state a standard rule.
