Cape Town Opera, based at the Artscape Theatre Centre and described by the company as the only continuously active opera company on the African continent, runs the Judith Neilson Young Artist Programme for singers who have finished their studies and need stage time before a professional career. Places are won by audition, not by a written bursary application. The most recent audition call closed on 18 August 2025, and by 29 September 2026 Cape Town Opera had not published a new one.

A paid training contract inside a working opera company

Cape Town Opera calls the programme a training and bursary programme for exceptionally talented postgraduate singers, pianists and conductors. Young artists are not sent off to a classroom: formal tuition is combined with work in the company’s rehearsal rooms and on stage beside experienced performers. The company lists what members receive:

  • a monthly stipend;
  • formal tuition and vocal coaching to refine technique and stage skills;
  • performance opportunities in Cape Town Opera productions;
  • personal mentorship and artistic guidance.

Cape Town Opera does not publish the stipend amount. It describes the programme as the only comprehensive advanced training curriculum of its kind for young graduate singers in South Africa. The company’s own pages disagree on its length: the Special Funds page calls it a two-year programme, while the About Us page calls it a three-year programme. Ask the company which applies before you accept a place.

The 2026 cohort is all singers

Although the programme description includes pianists and conductors, the seven young artists Cape Town Opera lists for 2026 are all singers: one soprano, two mezzo-sopranos, three tenors and a bass-baritone. The last audition notice was also addressed only to opera singers, so a pianist or conductor hoping to join should contact the company directly rather than wait for a singers’ call.

What the 2025 audition call asked for

The Judith Neilson Young Artist Programme audition notice invited South African opera singers of all voice types to send videos. Its conditions were:

RequirementDetail in the notice
QualificationA tertiary qualification
CitizenshipSouth African citizen
AgeAge limit of 32 years
IntroductionOne introduction video, at most two minutes long
RepertoireTwo arias that contrast in style and language
RecordingLandscape format, high-quality picture and sound, correctly labelled; piano accompaniment or backing tracks accepted
SubmissionVideos and details uploaded through the online form linked on the notice; emailed entries not considered
DatesDeadline 18 August 2025; feedback promised by 26 September 2025

Cape Town Opera warned that entries that do not meet these requirements will not be considered. The notice was still the one on the company’s website at the end of September 2026. The company has not said when it will hold the next auditions or whether the requirements will change, so treat the table as a record of the last round, not an open call.

The company runs a separate audition for its chorus and ad hoc production roles, aimed at experienced singers, with its own notice on the same website. It is a different route from the young artist programme.
