The Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision (DBREV) is an independent scholarship trust created in memory of Doug Banks, a South African renewable energy engineer and advocate. Each year it funds one South African to complete a Master’s degree in renewable energy or a related field, choosing candidates who want to tackle energy poverty and climate change in Africa, and it surrounds the scholar with mentors from the energy industry.
About the DBREV Scholarship
- A two-year scholarship for a relevant Master’s degree at a South African university, covering tuition and a living stipend.
- Fields: renewable energy, energy access and energy poverty, approached from engineering, science, environmental studies, finance, economics or development studies.
- Mentoring from the trust’s panel of energy professionals and access to its network.
- One scholar selected each year.
DBREV Scholarship eligibility requirements
- South African citizen or permanent resident.
- A first degree in engineering, science, environmental or geographical science, finance, economics or development studies.
- Eligible to register for a relevant Master’s degree at a South African university.
- A demonstrated commitment to renewable energy, energy access and climate change mitigation in Africa.
How to apply for the DBREV Scholarship
- Open the scholarship page at dougbanks.co.za when the call opens and complete the online application.
- Upload your CV, academic transcripts, a motivation setting out your vision for renewable energy in Africa and details of the Master’s programme you intend to register for.
- Submit before the closing date. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by the selection panel and hear back around the end of November.
