Esri South Africa is the local distributor of ArcGIS, the geographic information system software used by municipalities, mines, utilities and government departments across the country. It runs its own training college in Midrand and funds a small annual bursary for matriculants who want to qualify as GIS technicians through the college’s two-year diploma.

About the Esri South Africa Bursary

  • Qualification: Diploma in Geoinformation Science and Technology (GISc&T), accredited by the South African Geomatics Council, at Esri South Africa College in Midrand.
  • Duration: two years, full-time.
  • Number of awards: five per intake.
  • Coverage: full course fees for the whole diploma, plus textbooks and study materials. Accommodation and travel are the student’s responsibility.

Graduates leave with an industry-recognised qualification and ArcGIS skills that are in demand in surveying, planning, environmental and utility work.

Esri South Africa Bursary eligibility requirements

  • Completed Matric in one of the two years before the intake. For 2027 that means Matric in 2025 or 2026.
  • Between 65% and 100% for Mathematics in Matric.
  • Intending to study the GISc&T diploma at Esri South Africa College and able to complete it within two years.
  • Willing to live in Gauteng for the duration of the course.
  • A genuine interest in the GIS industry, and the attributes Esri looks for: hard-working, curious, open-minded, ethical and a strong problem-solver.

  1. Watch the bursary section of esri-southafrica.com for the 2027 call.
  2. Complete the online application form.
  3. Upload a copy of your ID and your National Senior Certificate or final Matric results.
  4. Submit before the closing date. Shortlisted applicants are invited to an interview at the Midrand office.

Update note (checked September 2026): the 2026 intake closed on 31 January 2026 and the 2025 intake on 31 January 2025. The 2027 call had not been published when we checked. Esri opens its bursary page in the last quarter of the year, so expect a 2027 call between November 2026 and January 2027 with a closing date on or around 31 January 2027.
