Gauteng College of Nursing Bursary Eligibility requirements 

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Be a South African citizen and reside in Gauteng Province.
  2. Hold one of the following school-leaving qualifications (or be in Grade 12):
    • Senior Certificate
    • National Senior Certificate (NSC)
    • National Certificate Vocational (NCV) Level 4 (Primary Health)
  3. Meet minimum subject/academic scores:
    • Senior Certificate: English HG D (or SG C), Biology HG D (or SG C), Mathematics HG D (or SG C), and an M-score of 17.
    • NSC: English level 4, Life Sciences level 4, Mathematics level 4 (or Maths Literacy level 5), with an APS of at least 27 (Life Orientation counts for half).
    • NCV Primary Health: At least 50% in fundamental subjects and 60% in vocational subjects.
  4. Demonstrate key personal attributes and competencies: compassion, patience, organisation, leadership, honesty, flexibility, problem-solving, computer literacy and good study skills.
  5. Be willing to sign a service agreement with Gauteng Department of Health and participate fully in Work Integrated Learning (WIL), including night, weekend, and public holiday shifts at public health facilities.
  6. Pass a psychometric assessment and a medical surveillance check (physical exam, verification of documents) if shortlisted.

    • Medical surveillance: shortlisted candidates undergo a physical exam and verification of submitted documents.
  3. Selection Agreement
    • If selected, students must sign an agreement with the Gauteng Department of Health.
    • You will be expected to attend lectures and complete WIL in public health settings (hospitals, clinics) as part of your training.
  4. Onboarding
    • Once accepted, you will study toward a Diploma in Nursing at one of GCON’s campuses.
