VerifiedMasinyusane Development Organisation is an education non-profit founded in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) in 2008. It runs literacy programmes in township schools, employs young people as reading tutors, and through its Grassroots Youth Development Bursary funds tertiary study for students from low-income families in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.
About the Grassroots Youth Development Bursary
The bursary is for undergraduate study in any field, at degree, diploma or certificate level, at a public university, university of technology or TVET college. It provides partial or full funding depending on the student’s need and any other funding they hold, and can cover:
- Registration fees.
- Tuition fees.
- Study material and textbooks.
- Accommodation.
- A living allowance or transport allowance.
Awards are made for one academic year at a time. Students reapply each year and renewal depends on academic performance. Bursars are paired with a mentor for the duration of their studies.
Grassroots Youth Development Bursary eligibility criteria
- South African citizen.
- Under 29 years old.
- Living in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality or Sundays River Valley Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
- Combined household income of less than R350 000 a year.
- Completed Matric, or in Matric with results that qualify you for your chosen course.
- Accepted, or already enrolled, for an undergraduate qualification at a recognised public institution.
- Good academic results. Preference goes to students who show academic potential but lack the means to study.
Application requirements
All copies must be certified within the last three months. Have these ready before you open the form:
- Certified copy of your ID.
- Certified Matric certificate, or latest Matric results.
- Full academic record if you are already studying.
- Letter of provisional or final acceptance from the institution.
- Certified IDs of your parents or guardians.
- Proof of household income: recent payslips, a SASSA grant letter, or an affidavit if unemployed.
- Proof of address.
- Three months of bank statements.
How to apply
- Get the 2027 application link from masinyusane.org, the Masinyusane Facebook page, or by WhatsApp on 067 223 8885. A new Google form is issued for each cycle.
- Complete every section of the form and upload the certified documents listed above.
- Submit before the closing date. Incomplete or late applications are not considered.
- Shortlisted applicants are contacted for an interview before awards are confirmed at the start of the academic year.

The 2026 round closed on 23 January 2026. The 2027 closing date has not been published; expect January 2027.
