Heraeus is a German technology group that works with precious metals, specialty materials and sensors. Its South African subsidiary, Heraeus South Africa in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), refines platinum-group metals and manufactures catalysts for the motor industry. The company has offered bursaries to chemistry and mathematics students in years when it has recruitment needs.

About the Heraeus Bursary

The bursary was a full award covering tuition fees, books, stationery and accommodation for full-time study in:

  • Analytical chemistry
  • Chemistry
  • Chemical process technology
  • Pure and applied mathematics

Heraeus Bursary eligibility requirements

  • South African citizen.
  • Completed Matric with results that qualify you for the chosen degree.
  • Studying, or accepted to study, full-time at an accredited public university or university of technology in South Africa.
  • Financial need, and a record of community involvement, which the motivation letter had to describe.

Heraeus Bursary application process

Applications were emailed to hza-hr-all@heraeus.com with the subject line “Heraeus Bursary Application” and these attachments:

  • Certified copy of your ID.
  • Most recent academic results on the institution’s letterhead.
  • A CV.
  • A motivation letter explaining why you need the bursary and what community work interests you.
  • Certified ID of the person who supports you financially, and their proof of income.

Shortlisted applicants were interviewed online in August, with results before the start of the academic year.

Heraeus Bursary closing date

The last confirmed closing date was 30 July 2022. No 2027 closing date has been published. If Heraeus advertises again, expect a July closing date.
