Old Mutual does not advertise a scatter of different learnerships. It runs one, called Amathuba, aimed squarely at matriculants with no work experience, and it fills a single cohort a year. Knowing that changes how you apply: there is one window to catch, one set of marks to meet, and a selection process that runs longer than most people expect.
What Amathuba actually is
- Twelve months of in-house training and workplace exposure across different parts of the business.
- A Wealth Management qualification at NQF Level 4, which Old Mutual describes as FSP recognised.
- Exposure to several career paths inside a financial services group, rather than one fixed job title.
- Work on products, legislation and community projects, so you leave with something concrete to talk about in an interview.
FSP recognition is the part school leavers underestimate. A Financial Services Provider must use staff whose qualifications are recognised for the advice and products they handle, so this certificate is a licence-side credential, not just a certificate of attendance. It is what lets you move between insurers, brokers and banks afterwards.
The marks Old Mutual asks for
| Requirement | What the programme states |
|---|---|
| Citizenship and age | South African citizen aged between 18 and 30 |
| Employment status | Unemployed, and not studying toward another qualification at another institution |
| Previous learnerships | You may not have done a Wealth Management NQF 4 learnership before |
| School result | Passed Grade 12, or an NQF Level 4 equivalent |
| English | 50% or more |
| Second language | 50% or more in an official second language |
| Mathematics | 50% or more in Pure Mathematics, or 50% or more in Mathematical Literacy |
| Availability | Able to start on the date the cohort begins |
Mathematical Literacy at 50% is accepted. That single line matters, because plenty of people who assume financial services is closed to them without Pure Maths are in fact eligible.
How selection runs, stage by stage
- Apply online with your CV, a one-page CV, your certified Matric results and your ID.
- Psychometric assessment. Shortlisted applicants are sent a link to complete assessments through Odyssey.
- One-way video interview. Those who progress record answers through Wamly, in their own time, with no interviewer on the call.
- Meet and greet. A coffee chat with the teams, which is as much about you deciding as them.
- Offers go out shortly before the cohort starts.
Two of those stages catch people out. A one-way video interview feels unnatural, so record a practice answer on your phone first and watch it back. And the assessments are timed, so do them somewhere with a stable connection rather than on the last evening before they expire.
The 2026 cycle, as a guide to timing
The most recent intake closed applications on 7 September 2026 at 23:59, with offers going out by the end of September and the cohort starting on 1 October 2026. Old Mutual publishes the next window on the same Amathuba learnership page, so if you are reading this after that date, the practical move is to check the page monthly from the middle of the year.
What you will be paid
Old Mutual does not publish the Amathuba allowance. What it may not do is pay below the legal minimum for a learner at your credit level, which for an NQF 4 programme starts at R455 a week. See the full table.
The other routes into Old Mutual
- Bursaries and graduate programmes, listed on the Old Mutual careers site for people already studying or already qualified.
- Personal Financial Advice. Old Mutual recruits advisers separately and advertises training allowances during the first months, with earnings tied to commission afterwards. It is a sales career, not a learnership, and it suits very different people.
- Contact centre roles, which are advertised as ordinary jobs and are a realistic second door if you miss the Amathuba window. Compare that with a YES placement.
If financial services is the goal but Old Mutual is the only door you have tried, Capitec recruits for branch service work on a different cycle, and the sector guide shows who else takes entry-level learners.
Frequently asked questions
What qualification does the Old Mutual learnership give you?
A Wealth Management qualification at NQF Level 4, which Old Mutual describes as FSP recognised, so it counts toward the requirements a financial services provider must meet for its staff.
What marks do I need for the Amathuba learnership?
Grade 12 or an NQF 4 equivalent, with at least 50% for English, at least 50% for an official second language, and at least 50% for either Pure Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.
Can I apply if I am 31?
No. The programme states an age range of 18 to 30 at application.
How long does the Old Mutual selection process take?
Expect several weeks. After the closing date come psychometric assessments, a one-way video interview and a meet-and-greet before offers are made, usually shortly before the cohort starts.
Does Old Mutual charge anything to apply?
No. Applications go through its own careers site and nothing is payable at any stage.
