Two in-house bursaries, two professions
Old Mutual funds students for the two professions its insurance and investment business depends on most. The actuarial bursary pays for strong mathematics students to study actuarial science and leads into Old Mutual’s actuarial development track. The accounting bursary covers university and residence costs for top accounting students, who then join the Old Mutual Chartered Accountant Training (OMCAT) programme.
Both bursaries expect bursars to work for Old Mutual after graduating, and both ran early in 2026. Listings gave 30 May or 30 June 2026 as the closing date for the 2027 rounds, so Grade 11 learners interested in 2028 funding should watch Old Mutual’s careers pages from about March to April 2027.
The Imfundo Trust is a separate route
The Imfundo Trust grew out of what is now Old Mutual Investment Group. Set up in 2011, the trust aims to bring more black students, and especially women, into the investment industry. StudyTrust runs the applications and student support rather than Old Mutual’s own recruiters.
The Imfundo scholarship for 2027 closes on 30 September 2026. StudyTrust accepts applications from 1 June to 30 September, and only students who will be in first or second year in 2027 can apply, with an exception for climate studies.
Choosing between the three
A Grade 12 learner with excellent mathematics results who wants a guaranteed job should look at the actuarial bursary. A student aiming for CA(SA) through a firm-style training programme fits the accounting bursary. A first- or second-year student interested in investments, who would rather not commit to one employer, fits the Imfundo Trust. Old Mutual describes creating shared value and sustainable transformation as core to how the group does business, and the three routes reflect different parts of that aim.
Students applying for the accounting bursary can compare training programmes on our chartered accountant bursaries page.
