Closed: Legal Aid South Africa's FAQ says the 2026 round closed on Friday, 25 September 2026 and reopens annually, with no date yet for the next round.
Legal Aid South Africa takes on 300 new candidate attorneys every year through its Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme, which makes it one of the largest single sources of articles for LLB graduates in the country. The 2026 application round closed on Friday, 25 September 2026. Legal Aid SA says the programme reopens every year but has not published the dates of the next round.
This is not a bursary. A candidate attorney at Legal Aid SA is an employee doing the practical vocational training that the legal profession requires before admission as an attorney, while working on real criminal and civil matters for clients who cannot pay for a lawyer.
Articles at a state-funded law firm
Legal Aid SA is an independent statutory body set up under the Legal Aid South Africa Act 39 of 2014 to provide legal representation at state expense to people who cannot afford it. The organisation calls itself the biggest law firm on the African continent: it employs more than 2,000 legal staff and runs 64 local offices and 64 satellite offices, usually close to courts, with each local office serving between 10 and 20 courts.
Each local office works like a law firm, with a head of office, supervisory and principal legal practitioners, legal practitioners, candidate attorneys and paralegals. Legal Aid SA says roughly 600 candidate attorneys are in the programme at any given time. The office work covers advice, referrals and litigation in defined criminal and civil matters, which gives candidate attorneys far more court exposure than articles at many commercial firms.
After admission, Legal Aid SA offers a career path with specialisation in criminal or civil law, High Court Units, a Senior Litigator role, and a management stream up to Head of Office and provincial executive level.
The 60% degree average and other entry rules
Legal Aid SA’s FAQ sets out what it needs from applicants:
- An LLB degree. Only LLB graduates may apply, and the academic transcript must be attached.
- A degree average of at least 60%.
- Practical Legal Training (PLT) is not required beforehand. Applicants can indicate on the form that they want to complete PLT with Legal Aid SA during their articles.
- A driver’s licence is not required, and applicants without one are not penalised.
A student who applied before finishing the degree must reapply once qualified, with the final transcript and an updated CV. Legal Aid SA also runs a separate Disabilities Recruitment Programme, listed on its careers menu.
Applying through a Legal Aid SA website profile
Applications are accepted only on the Legal Aid SA website. The applicant registers a profile through Login/Register on the main menu and then submits the form on the Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme application page, choosing a province for placement and uploading the transcript and CV. Documents must be Word or PDF files under 15MB, with no apostrophes or special characters in the file name.
Uploaded documents can be changed only while the round is open. To fix a wrong upload during that time, email CARecruitmentProgramme@legal-aid.co.za with your full name and ID number; the technical team deletes the application so it can be submitted again. The same address handles upload errors (send a screenshot). Legal Aid SA never charges a fee for a job application.
Placement is rolling, not a fixed January start
Legal Aid SA fills candidate attorney posts as vacancies arise at its offices, so recruitment from each round continues through the year rather than ending with one intake date. The FAQ states that 2026 applications are for 2026 placement. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an assessment at a Legal Aid SA office.
Anyone who has heard nothing three months after applying may follow up with the human resources representative for the province chosen on the form, giving full name, ID number and email address:
| Placement province | HR contact |
|---|---|
| Eastern Cape | Papama Flepu, papamaf@legal-aid.co.za |
| Free State and North West | Daniel Oageng, danielo@legal-aid.co.za |
| Gauteng | Kedibone Thinda, kedibonet@legal-aid.co.za |
| KwaZulu-Natal | Nombuso Mbhele, nombusom1@legal-aid.co.za |
| Limpopo and Mpumalanga | Mary Thobejane, maryt@legal-aid.co.za |
| Northern Cape and Western Cape | Siphokazi S. Gcilitshana, siphokazig@legal-aid.co.za |
Applicants from an earlier year who never received a reply should treat the application as unsuccessful and reapply in the next round.
