Matric Rewrites: How to Register for Supplementary Exams

If you are disappointed with your matric results, you can rewrite subjects in the next examination session.

But here is the truth: wallowing won’t fix your certificate.

What will fix it is taking action — and you have a limited window to do that.

For the Class of 2025, registration for the May/June 2026 supplementary examination closed on Friday, 6 February 2026. The Department of Basic Education announces the equivalent deadline for the Class of 2026 after the January 2027 results.

This guide will show you exactly who qualifies, how to apply online, and what documents you need today so you don’t miss your second chance.

Who Qualifies for the Supplementary Examination?

Many students panic because they are not sure if they are “allowed” to rewrite. Let’s clear the confusion.

You qualify for the supplementary examination if any of these apply to you:

1. You Failed One or Two Subjects

If you failed only one or two subjects in your matric results, you can rewrite those subjects.

This is the most common group of candidates.

2. You Missed an Exam for Medical Reasons

If you missed a paper due to illness or another medical issue, you can apply as long as you have a valid doctor’s note as proof.

3. You Want to Improve Your Marks (Upgrading)

If you passed but are unhappy with your marks and want to improve them, you can register as an upgrade candidate.

Important:
The supplementary series takes place in May/June, not straight after the results come out.

How to Register for the Supplementary Examination

There are two ways to register. Always try online first, but be ready with a backup.

The website often becomes slow or crashes close to deadlines. Do not wait until February 5.

Option B: Register at a District Education Office (Backup Plan)

If the online system is not working, go in person to your nearest District Education Office.

Officials there can help you register manually and avoid missing the deadline.

Yes.
For most students, the first rewrite is free.

Can I change my subjects?

No, usually not.
