Media24 publishes no application round or closing date and directs students to the universities; Wits career-entry journalism honours, which lists Media24 as a sponsor, closes to 2027 applicants on 30 September 2026.
Media24, the publisher behind News24, Netwerk24 and a long list of newspapers and magazines, funds two groups of students: postgraduate journalism students at four universities, and students in software engineering. Media24 does not run an open application form for either. Its corporate contact page tells students to enquire at the universities, and it rules out funding for any other undergraduate studies. This page sets out what Media24 and the universities themselves publish, and what they leave out.
What Media24 says it funds
The bursary section of the Media24 contact page is short. In summary, Media24 says that:
- it offers bursaries every year for postgraduate journalism studies at Wits, North-West University (NWU), Stellenbosch University or Rhodes University;
- it also offers bursaries to students in software engineering;
- anyone interested should enquire at those journalism schools, or at “the other universities” for software engineering;
- it gives no financial assistance to other students or for any other undergraduate studies.
Media24 does not publish the value of its bursaries, the number awarded, any work-back condition or a closing date. It also does not name the universities where it supports software engineering students. Claims found elsewhere about fixed numbers of bursaries or guaranteed internships are not on Media24’s current page, so check them with the university before relying on them.
Getting in through a journalism honours programme
Because the journalism bursaries are handled through the universities, the practical first step is to apply for the postgraduate course. Of the four schools Media24 names, two publish details that matter for a 2027 start:
Wits Centre for Journalism
The career-entry BA Honours in Journalism and Media Studies page lists Media24 among its bursary sponsors, with Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters and Moneyweb. Wits says these opportunities go to selected candidates at the news organisation’s discretion. The honours degree covers print, online, radio and television work, and students produce a weekly campus newspaper. Applications for 2027 close on 30 September 2026 through the Wits online application form.
Stellenbosch University Department of Journalism
The Stellenbosch BAHons Journalism accepts graduates of any bachelor’s degree, not only a BA, and admits around 25 students a year after a strict selection process. Applicants write an entrance test in September, and some are interviewed. Applications close on 31 August each year, so the 2027 intake has already closed. The programme page does not mention Media24 funding; ask the department at journalism@sun.ac.za or 021 808 3488.
Rhodes University and NWU
We found no mention of a Media24 bursary on the current journalism pages of Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies or NWU’s journalism subject group. Media24 still names both universities, so students there should ask the school’s postgraduate office directly.
Software engineering students
Media24 gives no detail about its software engineering bursaries beyond the fact that they exist and are handled through universities. It does not say whether they are for undergraduate or postgraduate study, which universities take part, or what they pay. A software engineering student interested in Media24 funding should ask their university’s bursary or financial aid office whether Media24 is a sponsor there. Our software engineering bursaries list covers funders that publish open application rounds.
No formal internships or job shadowing
Media24 states that it has no formal internship or job-shadowing programme. It suggests contacting a publication or business unit in your area to ask whether it can accommodate you. Paid vacancies are posted on media24.simplify.hr, and Media24 says CVs sent to its general mailboxes are not processed or forwarded.
Journalism students looking for funders with open application rounds can compare the options on our journalism bursaries page. The UFS Matriculant of the Year bursary is a separate award for school leavers, run by the University of the Free State, and is not part of the Media24 postgraduate scheme.
