Diamonds, data and traceability

De Beers says sustainability, transparency and ethical sourcing are fundamental to its business. De Beers uses technology including blockchain and artificial intelligence to build traceability systems that track diamonds from mine to market, which matters to customers who want proof that a diamond was responsibly sourced.

De Beers also publishes quarterly production reports, such as its report for the second quarter of 2026, and describes synthetic diamond’s industrial uses. De Beers’ Element Six business makes synthetic diamond materials in South Africa.

The Venetia bursary

In South Africa, De Beers operates the Venetia mine near Musina in Limpopo. De Beers has advertised a Venetia bursary after matric results each year, aimed at students from the communities around the mine.

The last widely published Venetia round closed on 21 January 2022, and no 2027 advert had appeared when BursariesAfrica checked. The bursary may still run through local channels rather than wide advertising, or it may have paused, so students need to check.

How to check for a De Beers bursary

Students in the Musina area and surrounding villages should ask the Venetia mine’s community office in January, after matric results, whether a bursary round is open. Ask as well at local municipal offices and schools, which often receive mine bursary adverts first.

Because no recent round has been confirmed, Limpopo students interested in mining should also apply to other mining bursaries with published dates.
