The Hexagon Trust calls it a humbling fact that more than 18 000 students who would not otherwise have reached tertiary education have done so with the trust’s help. The trust adds that those graduates now play important roles in their fields and communities, which the trust sees as the real measure of its work.
The Hexagon Trust links its focus to South Africa’s shortage of critical skills, naming engineers, scientists and accountants as professionals the country needs. The trust’s objective is to create an environment in which South African youth can flourish while making a difference in their fields.

The Hexagon Trust sets clear rules. Applicants must be entering their first year of study at a tertiary institution in South Africa, must be registered at an institution or able to provide proof of registration if shortlisted, and must be committed to developing their community. The trust funds study in science, engineering and commerce.
What the bursary covers
A Hexagon Trust bursary covers registration, tuition fees and a book allowance. The award does not mention accommodation or living costs, so students should plan for those separately, for example through NSFAS allowances, family support or other funders.
How to apply and research further
The Hexagon Trust takes applications online through its student portal. New applicants must register on the system first, then complete the online application form. Returning users log in with their existing details.
Because the trust funds first-year students, Grade 12 learners should prepare during matric: register on the portal early, gather certified documents and write a motivation that explains your commitment to your community. Email the trust with questions about deadlines and required documents.
Students already past first year cannot use this bursary, so second-year students should look for funders that accept continuing students, such as company bursaries that fund students from second year onwards.
