The Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) has represented municipal engineers since 1961. An institute run by its members
IMESA’s structure reflects its regional membership. IMESA called for nominations to serve on its council for October 2026 to October 2028, and IMESA’s rules say regional council members, called representatives, must be members regularly employed in infrastructure engineering who represent a particular province or branch.
IMESA also celebrates the people behind infrastructure, describing engineers as unsung heroes who turn blueprints into landmarks. That tone says something about IMESA’s purpose: raising the status of a profession that often goes unnoticed until a pipe bursts or a road fails.
The IMESA bursary
IMESA runs a bursary programme designed to help students studying civil engineering or related infrastructure disciplines, according to BursariesAfrica’s earlier guide. The bursary connects to IMESA’s mission, because municipalities across South Africa struggle to find qualified engineers to maintain services.

How to research IMESA
Email IMESA to ask when the next bursary round opens, which qualifications qualify and whether IMESA expects bursars to consider municipal engineering careers. Ask as well about student membership, which gives access to IMESA branch events where students meet working municipal engineers.
Read about the state of municipal infrastructure in your area, for example water losses or road maintenance backlogs, and explain in your motivation how you want to help. IMESA values commitment to public service.
Members who already belong to IMESA should note that the institute asks them to use the primary email address tied to their membership when syncing accounts on its website.
IMESA’s conferences bring municipal engineers, consultants and suppliers together to discuss problems such as water losses, ageing pipes and stormwater flooding. Students who attend as members can learn what practising engineers worry about and meet possible employers. Ask whether students attend at a reduced rate.
