Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality

Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality is a rural municipality in the Sekhukhune District of Limpopo, with its administrative centre at Jane Furse. The municipality borders Elias Motsoaledi, Fetakgomo, Ephraim Mogale and Lepelle-Nkumpi municipalities and serves more than 270 000 residents in about 65 000 households, according to a provider record checked in August 2026.

A largely rural, poor area

Most Makhuduthamaga residents live in villages rather than towns, and many households have limited income and little access to higher education funding. The municipality’s integrated development plan (IDP), which the Municipal Systems Act makes the principal planning instrument for budgets and investment, commits Makhuduthamaga to social upliftment, and the bursary forms part of those commitments.

Why a municipality funds students

Makhuduthamaga funds bursaries as a public-service obligation to invest in its own people, not for commercial reasons. The municipality allocates a dedicated external bursary budget each year, and the provider record gives R3 million for the 2026 intake. Makhuduthamaga prioritises residents with strong academic records from financially disadvantaged households.

BursariesAfrica’s older guide lists priority fields such as engineering, education, healthcare, accounting and social work, and describes applications opening in January after Matric results, with a 2026 closing date of 26 January. That guide has not been refreshed for 2027, so treat those details as a pattern rather than a promise.

When BursariesAfrica checked on 15 September 2026, much of the content on Makhuduthamaga’s website was old, including IDP notices from years ago. The site’s menu does include a bursaries section, but residents should not rely on the website alone for current dates.

How residents can verify the bursary

Visit or phone the municipal offices in Jane Furse in December and ask when the bursary opens and which fields it will fund for 2027. Ask your ward councillor, who usually receives municipal notices early, and check the municipality’s notice boards and community radio announcements.

Prepare certified copies of your ID and results, proof of residence in Makhuduthamaga and proof of household income before January, because a closing date only days after Matric results leaves little time. Apply to NSFAS at the same time.

Sekhukhune families often send children to universities far from home, such as the University of Limpopo near Polokwane or institutions in Gauteng, so travel and accommodation costs add to fees. Ask the municipality whether its bursary covers those costs or only tuition.
