The IT business for government

SITA describes itself as the IT business for the largest employer and consumer of IT products and services in South Africa: the government. SITA was set up to consolidate and coordinate the state’s IT resources, achieving cost savings through scale, increasing delivery capability and making systems work together. The SITA Act divides SITA’s services into mandatory services, which SITA must provide, and non-mandatory services, which it may provide.

SITA manages IT procurement and delivery to ensure government gets value for money, and offers end-to-end IT solutions to national, provincial and local government departments. SITA sees ICT as a socio-economic game changer, and supports the digitisation of public services that citizens use every day, according to a provider record checked in August 2026.

ICT skills in communities

SITA’s corporate social investment aims to build ICT-literate communities that can take part in the knowledge economy. SITA has funded ICT laboratories at previously disadvantaged schools in KwaZulu-Natal, supports youth development programmes, and offers Grade 11 and 12 learners opportunities to learn about ICT careers.

The SITA bursary

SITA’s external bursary addresses a shortage of ICT graduates entering public service. Recent intakes offered about 20 awards to ICT students with at least a 65% average and no other funding, covering tuition, study materials, accommodation, meals, a living allowance and work-integrated learning. SITA’s bursary carries a work-back obligation matched to the years funded, which effectively guarantees graduates a placement at SITA.
