Walter Sisulu University (WSU)

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is a public comprehensive university in the Eastern Cape, named after the anti-apartheid leader Walter Sisulu. About 30 000 students and nearly 1 800 staff study and work across WSU’s four campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City (East London) and Komani.

Formed by merger

WSU was formed in 2005 by merging the University of Transkei, Border Technikon and Eastern Cape Technikon. As a comprehensive university, WSU offers higher certificates and diplomas alongside degrees, honours and postgraduate qualifications, including specialist Master of Medicine programmes in fields such as paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology.

A role in rural development

WSU says it is uniquely positioned to support the national government’s focus on rural development. Much of the former Transkei region around Mthatha is rural, and WSU’s graduates in health, education, agriculture and public administration are central to services there. WSU’s vision and mission commit it to graduating versatile individuals and championing sustainable development and social justice.

A refreshed identity

WSU has refreshed its brand, calling itself “your university of choice reimagined” and a transformative force “reclaiming Africa’s intellectual destiny”. The refresh includes official merchandise, and WSU’s sports teams, such as its All Blacks rugby side, are part of campus pride.

Rules that affect registration

WSU’s faculty pages set out practical rules students should know. A full-time student must register for at least 90 credits a year, and no student may register for more than 160 credits. Students may move up an academic level only after passing at least 80 credits at the lower level, and cannot take a course at a higher level before passing its prerequisite. Recognition of prior learning and cognate certificates or diplomas can offer alternative entry routes.

Extended programmes may stay open longer

WSU opened 2027 applications on 1 April 2026. Undergraduate and diploma programmes close on 30 September 2026, and some extended curriculum programmes may stay open until mid-October. The APS guide below covers how WSU scores applicants on each of its campuses.
