VerifiedWestfalia Fruit is a multinational fruit company founded in 1949 by Dr Hans Merensky, built first around avocado farming at Tzaneen in Limpopo, according to a provider record checked in August 2026. For more than 75 years Westfalia has supplied avocados, fresh fruit and plant-based products to international retail, foodservice and wholesale customers.

The AvoExpert
Westfalia calls itself the “AvoExpert” and says it has the most diverse avocado-growing footprint in the world, with a global network of farms, partner growers and nurseries on different continents. Besides avocados, Westfalia supplies citrus, cherries, blueberries and other fruit. Westfalia’s ripening technologies deliver ready-to-eat avocados year-round, and its processing plants sort, clean and package fruit with a “whole fruit” approach that reduces waste.
Westfalia invests in research and development to improve farming practices, develop new varieties, strengthen crop resilience and use less water, and uses mulching, integrated pest management and water conservation. Westfalia is also expanding in Asia, including ripeness guidance for avocado shoppers in India.
Caring for communities
Westfalia’s community programmes focus on skills, education, early childhood development, primary healthcare and living conditions. With the Waitrose and Partners Foundation and Albert Heijn, Westfalia provides education for 217 children aged one to five at an early childhood development centre in Tzaneen, and a resource centre on its estate gives Grade R to 12 learners computers, internet, a library and a classroom. Westfalia’s Tzaneen clinic has nurses, social workers and doctors serving employees, families and the community, and Westfalia allocates unused land to local communities for groundnut farming.
The educational bursary scheme
Westfalia’s Educational Bursary Scheme builds skills for agricultural and technical roles and for community fields. Funded fields include agriculture and horticulture, food science, engineering, finance, human resources, logistics, technical trades, medicine, nursing and teaching, at universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges. Westfalia gives preference to employees’ dependants and students from communities near its operations, and public information describes no binding work-back.
Westfalia’s last round closed on 30 November 2025, and the 2027 call had not appeared by mid-September 2026.
