RCL Foods, the maker of Sunbake bread, Supreme flour, Selati sugar, Yum Yum peanut butter and Bobtail pet food, recruits recent university graduates as Management Trainees. The company pitches the programme at people “fresh out of varsity” and describes it as mentorship, hands-on work and exposure to different parts of the business. It is a salaried job with the company, not a bursary; RCL Foods’ study funding is covered separately on our RCL Foods bursary page.

The most recent intake window shown on RCL Foods’ Management Trainees page opened on 1 April 2025 and closed on 30 June 2025. RCL Foods had not replaced those dates with a newer window by the end of September 2026, and its graduate recruitment portal listed no Management Trainee openings.

Trainee streams across three business units

Trainees are placed in one of RCL Foods’ business units. Groceries covers the grocery, beverage and pet food brands, plus the spreads operation RCL Foods runs for Siqalo Foods (Rama, Stork and Flora). Baking takes in Sunbake and Sunshine Bakery bread, the Pretoria West flour mill, Pieman’s pies in Klerksdorp, and speciality cakes and breads made for Woolworths. Sugar is centred on the Nkomazi region of Mpumalanga, where most of the sugar farms and two of the three mills are.

The company’s opportunities page lists these streams, each with its own description:

  • Human Resources, Commercial (costing models, pricing and category profitability), Marketing, and Customer (category management and negotiations with retailers);
  • Manufacturing and Supply Chain, from procurement and production planning to logistics;
  • Industrial, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering in the plants;
  • Electrical Engineering (medium and high voltage) and Instrumentation Engineering in the Sugar unit, plus an Irrigation Engineer post;
  • Research and Development.

RCL Foods does not publish minimum marks, a list of accepted degrees, the length of the programme or the salary on these pages; those details appear only in the adverts on its portal while a window is open.

Six steps from questionnaire to offer

  1. Apply online: complete a questionnaire and upload a CV and academic transcripts.
  2. Complete mobile-enabled assessments and a recorded video interview.
  3. Work through a business case study, present the findings and sit a panel interview.
  4. Final candidates go through pre-employment checks run by the Talent Acquisition team.
  5. Once the checks are verified, the team prepares an offer of employment.
  6. The trainee starts at RCL Foods.

Applications go through RCL Foods’ graduate recruitment portal. With no openings listed, the portal lets graduates register a profile and set an alert on the Management Trainee Opportunities category, which sends a notice when the next adverts go up. The Management Trainees page is where the company posts each window’s dates.

RCL Foods warns on its careers page that criminals have posed as the company to offer “recruitment” for a fee. Its genuine email addresses end in @rclfoods.com, and scams can be reported to its Tip-offs Anonymous line on 0800 00 3224. More on the group’s funding and entry routes is on the RCL Foods provider profile.
