Applications for the MSDS 2027 intake ran from 16 February to 27 March 2026 and have closed; the SANDF has not announced dates for the next intake.
The Military Skills Development System (MSDS) is the South African National Defence Force’s main entry route for young people straight out of school or college. Recruits sign a two-year contract. In the first year they do basic military training and then specialised functional training in their arm of service; in the second year they are posted to units to apply what they learnt, build leadership and gain practical experience. Applications for the 2027 intake ran from 16 February to 27 March 2026 and have closed.
The MSDS recruits for the SA Army, SA Air Force, SA Navy and SA Military Health Service, and recruits are appointed to a specific mustering, the military term for a trade or occupation. A 2023 article in the government newspaper Vuk’uzenzele described an MSDS recruit who went on to study for a Diploma in Nursing at the Military Health Service nursing college in Pretoria. The article noted that MSDS members can go on to study further within the military or develop their skills.
Age, APS and fitness rules on the 2027 form
The SANDF’s application form for the 2027 intake set these requirements:
- South African citizenship, with no dual citizenship;
- aged 18 to 22 with Grade 12, or 18 to 26 on the day of reporting for someone with a three-year tertiary qualification;
- an Admission Point Score of 18 or more, not counting Life Orientation, with Mathematics and Physical Sciences needed for specialised musterings such as aviation engineering;
- no criminal record and no pending cases;
- meeting the medical requirements, including drug testing, psychometric testing and a medical evaluation;
- no tattoos visible in uniform, checked by a body inspection.
The form asks whether applicants hold an N6, a three-year diploma or a degree, so college and university graduates can apply alongside school leavers. It does not state the pay for the two years of service.
A paper form, posted or hand-delivered
The SANDF recruits for the MSDS on a printed form, which the Department of Defence publishes free on its forms page. The form itself states that it is not for sale, and the SANDF has said before that it does not use third parties or individuals to recruit. For the 2027 intake, applicants attached:
- a CV;
- a copy of their ID;
- a copy of the Matric certificate, with the 2025 statement of results accepted for that year’s matriculants;
- copies of any tertiary qualifications.
Completed forms were hand-delivered to the nearest SANDF recruitment centre or posted to: Department of Defence, Human Resource Division, Chief Directorate HR Management (Directorate HR Acquisition), Private Bag X976, Pretoria 0001. The form says applicants who have not been contacted by 31 December 2027 should consider their application unsuccessful.
Waiting for the next round of forms
The SANDF has not announced when forms for the next intake will be released. The last round was open for about six weeks, from mid-February to late March, so anyone planning to apply should keep checking the Department of Defence website and have copies of their documents ready. The Department of Defence website did not respond when we tried it on 29 September 2026.
Students who would rather study first and work in defence later can look at the Armscor bursary. Other uniformed routes with their own intakes include the Correctional Services learnership and the traffic officer learnership.
