Sasria, the South African Special Risks Insurance Association, is the state-owned insurer that covers riot, strike, terrorism and civil-unrest damage. Its bursary funds first-year university students in the scarce skills the insurance industry depends on, from actuarial mathematics and statistics to accounting and IT.

About the Sasria Bursary

The bursary funds a full-time bachelor’s degree at an accredited South African university in:

  • Accounting, finance and economics.
  • Insurance and risk management.
  • Mathematics and statistics.
  • Computer science and information technology.

It covers tuition and related study costs for the duration of the degree, subject to satisfactory results each year, and gives bursars exposure to Sasria through vacation work.

Sasria Bursary eligibility requirements

  • South African citizen aged 16 to 20.
  • Completed Matric with an overall average of at least 70% and a pass in Mathematics, not Mathematical Literacy.
  • Entering the first year of a bachelor’s degree in one of the fields above, full-time, at an accredited South African university.
  • Household income of less than R600 000 a year.

How to apply for the Sasria Bursary

  1. When the call opens, complete the online bursary form on sasria.co.za.
  2. Upload certified copies of: your ID; your Matric certificate or final results; your parents’ or guardians’ IDs, or death certificates where applicable; proof of household income (payslips or affidavits); proof of residence; and a motivation letter.
  3. Submit before the closing time. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed before awards are confirmed.
