The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) represents employers in the metals and engineering sector. Its bursary funds engineering students from “missing middle” families, who earn too much for NSFAS but cannot afford fees, and commits them to work in the steel and engineering manufacturing sector after graduating.

About the SEIFSA Bursary

The bursary covers tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, accommodation and transport for a degree or diploma at a South African university or university of technology in:

Electrical and electronic engineering.
Mechanical and industrial engineering.
Civil, chemical and metallurgical engineering.
Materials science.

Awards are renewed each year on results. Bursars commit to six months of service in the South African steel and engineering manufacturing sector for every year of funding.

SEIFSA Bursary eligibility requirements

South African citizen aged 35 or younger.
Matric with an overall average of at least 75% and good results in Mathematics and Physical Science.
Enrolled, or accepted, at a recognised South African university or university of technology for one of the fields above, and passed the institution’s aptitude test where required.
Gross household income of more than R350 000 but less than R650 000 a year.

Download the current year’s application form from seifsa.co.za.
Attach: a certified ID; a passport photograph; your Matric results or certificate; proof of registration or acceptance; your academic transcript if already studying; a testimonial; a motivation letter; proof of household income; and a medical declaration if applicable.
Email everything to bursaryapplications@seifsa.co.za with the subject line “SEIFSA Bursary Application – Your Full Name”, or hand-deliver it to SEIFSA House, 6th Floor, 42 Anderson Street, Johannesburg, or post it to PO Box 1338, Johannesburg, 2000, before 30 November.
